HR Roles and Responsibilities Paper Human Resource is a key to the success of a company by keeping in connection with the organization's objectives and business strategies. Human Resource maintains a healthy work environment between company policies and individuals. Human resource management focuses on securing, maintaining, and utilizing an effective work force, which organizations cannot survive without. Human resource management can also be described as the relationship between the employer and the employee.

There are basic functions all managers perform which are planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling. These represent what is often called the management process. Staffing, personnel management, or human resource management is the function for the organization to focus on today's workforce environment. It includes activities like recruiting, selecting, training, compensating, appraising, and developing.

The role of Human Resources is continuing to change. Today, H R executives are taking a more active role in meeting the competitive demands of today's corporations. This change has affected many HR executives, including the HR executive who works for PC Innovation. Human resource management role in this organization has had to increase their experience and knowledge with the increased changes. PC Innovation is a computer store with high integrity and is well known in the community. PC Innovation operates out of St. George Utah with sister companies in Salt Lake City Utah and also in Texas.

Every company elects it own Human Resource Management and assistants depending on the number of employees per location. There are many responsibilities involved with human resource management. Gary Dessler (2000) explains that, 'human resource management refers to the practice and policies you need to carry out the people or personnel aspects of your management job. ' Dessler lists these roles as 'conducting job analyses, planning labor needs, recruiting and selecting job candidates, orientating and training, managing wages and salaries, providing incentives and benefits, appraising performance, communicating, training and developing and building employee commitment (p. 2)". At PC Innovation, human resources is responsible for overseeing the policies and procedures, business conduct guidelines, the confidentiality agreement, benefits and compensation (when eligible), recruitment, new hire orientation and training, and the performance management. It is clear that human resources encompass a wide range of roles and responsibilities in our organization.

Human resource manager must actively develop training and assist the performance reviews for each employee at PC Innovation. Managers must then effectively review the employee performances to provide feedback and address an performance issues. Performance appraisals should be unbiased and focused on substantive performance issues. The role of human resources has definitely changed over the years and is still consistently changing. For example, human resource managers are responsible for pay system design. This task is essential and has evolved significantly since the rise of labor unions.

Human resource managers must design pay systems that compensate employees fairly in relation to the economy at large and the financial health of the organization. Additionally, human resource managers must develop reward systems that recognize extraordinary performance or creativity. Human resource manager at PC Innovation is experiencing some of the pressures from the changes that have occurred. HR is required to take on more responsibility for example when a position becomes vacant; the position is re-evaluated and is often times not filled.

The responsibilities are is then passed on to the HR manager, which results in a stressful working environment. Dessler states, 'a decade of globalization, deregulation, and technical advances has vastly increased the degree of competitiveness most organizations face today' (2000, p. 2). These trends are forcing organizations to regroup, downsize and squeeze more productivity out of its workforce. PC Innovations HR department is trying to take advantage of the advancements of electronic technology.

We are using the company's point of sale system to post information such as policies and procedures, guidelines as well as many different kinds of messages. This is helping with communication barriers between employee and employer. In conclusion, the human resource department at PC Innovation is feeling the pressures of today's competitive work environment. HR is going to continue to stay focused and give added value to our organization.

It is not going to be an easy task, but like other professions, PC Innovations human resource is going to have to adapt to the changes or move out of the way and let a new breed of HR specialists take over.
