Hunting Trip In Africa example essay topic

Ernest Hemingway was born 1899 and died in the year 1961. He was inspired to write this story from his own love of hunting. He hunted lions and buffalo on a similar hunting trip in Africa in 1933-34. In 1954, he received the Nobel Prize for his literary talents. The safari took place in the year 1908 in Africa. It was based on an actual trip, which was highly publicized.

The characters involved were Francis Macomber, a cowardly wealthy man, his unfaithful yet beautiful wife, Margot, and their hunting instructor, Robert Wilson. Francis had a reputation of being cowardly which agitated his wife. She often had affairs. Although neither of them belonged together, neither of them would ever leave the other.

Francis was to to rich for her to leave him and she was too beautiful for him to leave her. He also would never have had the courage to stand up for himself to her; therefore they were trapped in a ridiculous marriage. They were on a hunting trip in Africa during this tale. Francis was afraid of hunting, which again disappointed Margot and encouraged her to have a brief affair with the hunting instructor. During the next trip out, Francis had a new view and new power, which came over him. He was not afraid of hunting, or of standing up for himself anymore.

When his wife saw this, she become frightened he would leave her and "accidentally" shoots him while aiming at a buffalo, ending his life. She ironically inherits his money and becomes free to sleep with whomever she pleases. This story was slightly more depressing, with the same hunting theme. It seems to cheer for the underdog towards the end but then kills him off all together. Although I didn't completely enjoy " the Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber", I think maybe someone else may enjoy it..
