When it was time for me to pick a topic for my research paper, I did not have to think very long about what I wanted to do it on. I immediately thought I should research digital cameras. A couple of months ago I went out to dinner with some friends. One of my friends brought her digital camera with her. I liked the idea that after she took a picture with the digital camera she could view the image immediately on the cameras small monitor. After viewing the picture she could save it or erase it.

I don't own a digital camera and I did not know anything at all about them, until I chose this topic. I wanted to know more about them and the advantages, disadvantages and differences between different digital cameras. I was also curious about how long they have been around because I don't know anybody that has one. I also wondered how they work, are they complicated? There was so much I wanted to find out. Digital cameras are directly related to computers.

Digital cameras are not only small computers themselves, but a computer is needed to print the images of the digital camera. Some digital cameras even come with software for the computer to allow the digital camera and the computer to be compatible with each other. Another important element to the digital camera is a printer. A quality printer can produce quality prints. To answer the question of how the digital camera is directly related to the computer is directly. Without a computer there would not be a digital camera.

The two are dependant on each other to create the final outcome, the picture. Throughout the remainder of this paper, there are a few topics I will cover. These topics are: 1. Where did the digital camera develop, how does it work? The digital #1. cameras relation with the computer 3. The advantages of digital cameras, how do are they used in business?

I will cover these points in the order that I have listed them. The Development of the Digital Camera Digital technology can be linked all the way back to the video tape recorder from 1951. It uses a similar idea of converting electrical impulses to another form. They both use something called Charged Coupled Devise to sense intensity and light color. The government during the 1960's used forms of digital images. NASA used digital signals from space probes to send images of the moon back to earth onto NASA's computers.

It wasn't until 1972 that a film-less camera was made. It was created by Texas Instruments. Sony was next in 1981 to market the Mavica electronic still camera. Sony's camera was more like a video camera that took still shots. It did print the pictures through a printer though. The first megapixel sensor camera to create the 5 by 7 pictures was developed in 1986 by Kodak.

Kodak in 1990 then created the photo-CD system. The Nikon F-3 digital camera was released in 1991. The Nikon F-3 was more for the professional photographers. The consumer digital cameras were introduced in 1994, the Apple Quick Take, and in 1995 the Kodak DC 40, the Casio QV-11 and Sony's Cyber Shot Digital Still. Kodak invested a lot of money and time to advertise their new digital camera. Kodak teamed up with Hewlett Packard to create a color inkjet printer to print quality images.

Kodak also worked with Microsoft to make digital image software and Kiosks to make photo CD disks and print photographs. This is how the digital camera evolved into how we know it. After learning about where they came from, how do they work? Digital cameras capture a image like film cameras, but by a different way. Digital cameras have resolution or pixels. The number of pixels either a high or low amount determine the quality of the picture.

An image sensor also called a Charge Coupled Device takes the place of film. When the CCD captures light it translates light levels into digital signals. Next the camera will process the signals. The majority of the digital cameras come with a speed of ISO 100,200 or 400. These are comparable to film speeds. Also like film cameras there are zoom lenses, a flash and batteries for digital cameras.

The Digital Cameras Relation with the Computer One thing that is different is the plug in memory card. The memory card stores images captured. With a cable connected from the computer to the camera, the images from the camera can be downloaded to the computer. Digital cameras capture the images in color. The neat thing a person can do with the downloaded pictures depends on the software provided. Changing the color of the images from color to black and white can be done.

Images can be magnified, deleted, saved, made into a slide show and much more. All digital cameras come with software to personalize their pictures. Some software can provide more advanced options than others. The possibilities are almost endless. The Advantages of Digital Cameras, How are They Used In Business?

In today's technology thriving business', digital cameras are being used more than ever in the workplace. I did some research on some careers that use digital cameras in #3. place of the film camera. Graphic Designers prefer digital over film. The digital camera is more expensive than film cameras, but in the long run it will save them money. Before digital, a graphic designer would need to process and print film, which took time to do.

There would need to be multiple shots of the same object because film can be inconsistent in development. Sometimes even after taking the extra pictures and developing the film, it still may not have turned out the way it was suppose to. Then the designer would have to start all over again. With the digital camera all of the above steps would be eliminated. The digital camera saves time for a graphic designer. Time is also very crucial for a photojournalist.

A journalist has deadlines to meet. With a deadline fast approaching sometimes a digital camera is all that can be used because there is not time to process and develop the film. Natural lighting is not always the best for photographs so the digital camera adjusts to create the best possible image. Film cameras are still commonly used by photojournalists but the digital is close behind. Even Real Estate agents use digital photography. Real Estate agents can take pictures of a house and immediately send it to a client by email.

Buyers don't even have to leave their home to view homes they would like to know more about. The agent can communicate through the email while at the home for sale. A buyer can ask for the agent to take pictures of specific rooms, the backyard etc. This could save a lot of time and money for somebody trying to purchase a home from another state. The search for a home can be narrowed down from 20 to 4 by using the digital photography process. Some teachers are trying to incorporate using the digital camera in school.

Teachers use it for class projects or seating charts. The teachers let the class experiment #4. with the camera too. There is even an entire web page with ideas on how to use the digital camera in the classroom. The possibilities for its use in class are never ending. At my place of employment we use digital photography. I work for Costco.

We don't have the best quality equipment but it does make things easier. Members who have a Costco card must have their picture on the back of it. We use a digital camera to take their picture and put it on their card while they wait. It saves time and money to do it this way instead of sending the card in the mail.

Most jobs from roofing to teaching are using Digital Cameras in some way. There is even a new technology to turn print film into digital. A kiosk is being tested in Boston that makes print film into digital cd's for the computer. So people who don't have a digital camera can still turn their film into digital prints.

There is also the option of printing the film into prints in just ten minutes. No matter where you go the digital camera technology is being used. I have learned about where the digital technology came from, how the cameras work and the importance of their use in business. People use digital technology in everyday life to get their work done. After doing the research I know that I am going to buy a digital camera. I will wait until I can afford it.

I never knew there was so much you could do with the images. I like to be creative and with the digital camera you can do that. The research I did said to wait to buy digital because scientists are still perfecting the digital technology. Each year there are new developments with the camera, just as I wrote about in the first section of my paper. Now I am prepared to buy my first digital camera with what I have learned, maybe you will too.
