In "The Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge", Peyton Farquhar encounters internal conflicts that are hard to fight off because of the situation he found himself in. Imagery is a powerful description that makes people believe that Farquhar, a loving family man of thirty-five, is escaping. For example, Farquhar thinks that he was heavy that is why the rope breaks and falls down into the river and he looses the rope. This means that the author uses imaginable picture to Farquhar to make us believe that he escaped. In addition, he also thinks that his wife and kids was with in his arms, watching them grow. This shows that he loves his family and does things what ever it takes just to be with them.
Moreover, he felt courage within himself when he remembered his family. He escapes and swims without thinking he might get shot or killed. But, he died with dignity. When Farquhar started o swim and run away, it was his brain fighting death. When he landed on the white sand, he was very happy, laughing like crazy, lying in the ground moving his shoulders like wings, and carefully observed and study small objects.
For example, sees a white beautiful white flowers dewdrops upon blades of grasses, and the cute little tiny bug. These beautiful creatures are symbols of his new beginning life. This also means that he found a new start of bright future. Furthermore, he sees his wife's happy face, going down the stairs to hug him. His wife is a symbol of an angel, waiting for him to come up above. Therefore, he was certain and appears to be a confident man when faces his destiny.
Towards the ending of the story, Farquhar is aware of his expectations about his nearly death. At first he is in denial that he is not going to die. Farquhar's possession of such thoughts seemed heartless. He could feel the empty feeling especially sadness that he is not going to see his family again, as the thoughts swirled in his head.
After all the struggles that he have been through, he finally accept the reality rather than living with fantasy. The Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge was talked about the time of brutality, suffering, and darkness. A man put his life into such danger. Farquhar turn to selfish thought of his own survival because he was in the world where he could only count on himself from blows. Instead, he chooses the faces of death rather than fighting with nothing.
