Important Part Of Our Lives example essay topic

485 words
I remember my grandmother telling me a story. It was 11 December, 1930, not an important event as far as history is concerned. For my grandmother, however, it was a precious memory. She told me that the whole atmosphere in her village was full of patriotism that day.

The Village Park was being decorated with flowers, a podium had been constructed, and people were going to every house in the village giving a cry of swadeshi, poor na swaraj and most importantly to give the news that Bapuji was coming to their village that day. She told me that it was the happiest moment in her life when she saw Gandhi. He made the greatest impact on their lives. He urged them that day to fight for azad bharat by helping him in the non-cooperation movement. He asked them to boycott foreign goods and wear khadi. My grandmother to this day spins cloth in a charkha and only wears khadi.

A picture of Gandhi still hangs in her room and she lights an agarbati in front of the picture even till this day. This was the impact, which Gandhi had at that time and still has in the lives of our grandparents. But what about us? Does Gandhiji and the principles he stood for have any impact on our lives. Do we spear a moment to remember Gandhiji?

For most of the people, the only thing that 2 October signifies is a holiday. For me, however, it is much more than that. That day, a great human being was born who is responsible for the air of freedom, which we enjoy today. A brilliant lawyer, he could have dedicated his life to amassing wealth and living a life of luxury. Instead he spent his entire life for us, for our future, to enable us to say proudly that 'we are Indians'.

His brilliant principles like ahimsa (complete non-violence), the movements initiated by him like non-cooperation and civil disobedience can never be forgotten. Due to his efforts, we were able to achieve freedom without bloodshed, which was a part of freedom struggle in other countries such as Burma, Philippines and other countries. His love towards the untouchables whom he gave the name harijan's (children of gods), his fight against communalism shows his humane spirit. He has inspired great personalities like Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King in their struggle against racial discrimination in South Africa and USA. To me, to ask whether Gandhi is relevant is to ask -'is peace relevant, is truth essential, is humanity and tolerance important in our lives'? The answer is 'no'.

Gandhi will always be relevant. He will forever be an important part of our lives and will guide us whenever we go astray.
