240 words
Homer's ideals of life and society differ from the views of today. In the present, people look upon men and women as equal for the most part, while in Homer's day women were below the men in social status. The values of everyday life have changed in these many centuries. Family values have held strong.

They were important to people in Homer's time as well as to the people of today. Presently, people are becoming busier and busier with less time for their families, but these values are still held close. When a family member would go off to war, the worries and issues were the same back then as they would be today. A wife would be worried about her husband leaving her alone with children to raise and without a man around the home, much as would be the behavior in the present. Civilization was another major change. The acts of war were much more severe in Homer's time than they are today.

While war is still a gruesome thing, methods of killing people were much more barbaric in the past, usually involving an overly elaborate and exotic death. It seems as though a certain amount of respect in battle has been achieved over the ages. Both Homer's time and the present deal mostly with the same types of values and ideals, but on different levels.
