Indicators Of Deprivation example essay topic

Indicators of Deprivation I am going to link my study of environmental quality with deprivation. For my secondary data I am going to use the 1991 Census. As I started my project after the data for the 2001 census had come out. Deprivation is the hardship suffered by local communities, when an individual's well being falls below an acceptable standard. Deprivation is often associated with the decline of inner cities with problems of poverty, pollution, crime, over crowding, poor housing conditions and unemployment.

Deprivation leads to a spiral of decline in inner city areas as the poorest sections of society are usually left behind in the inner city when the more affluent people move out to the suburbs. In some cities business are reluctant to move their business to the centres and the business in the centre decentralize. Luckily this hasn't happened in Cardiff as the council made an effort to stop the building of out of town stores and encouraged businesses into the city centre. Also with the CBD C (Cardiff bay development cooperation) redeveloping the Bay this has had links to the development of the city centre and stopped it from becoming a 'dead heart' centre.

Measuring deprivation is therefore about measuring the status of areas. There are many indicators of deprivation that can be taken from census data, which can indicate which wards are suffering from deprivation. Such as, Unemployment %, Housing owned by the council, houses without central heating, Social Class, levels of literacy and crime figures. The indicators of deprivation I will use for my study will be: .

Social class five - I will use the census to show me the percentage of people living in each ward that are in social class five. Social class five consists of unskilled workers; it is the lowest of the social classes. People who are unskilled may find it hard to get a job and may be less affluent than people in higher social classes... Council owned housing - I will use the census to find the percentage of households in each ward that is owned by the council (council houses).

I have chosen to use this data as an indicator of derivation as the people who live in these houses are not able to afford to buy their own houses. These houses are usually linked with single parent families, which is also another indicator of deprivation.
