When you think of self mutilation you think of cutters and suicide attempts right? Well that is right to some extent; Yes Cutting is the most common self injuring method, but other severe forms of self mutation include... burning, self hitting, interference with wound healing hair pulling and bone breaking. In the following Paragraphs I will elaborate on each of these subjects more, as well as esthetic self mutilation, while focusing on cutting.

Cutting is a very touchy subject, people don't like to talk about it and because of that people tend to feel that they are the only one in the world who does it. Now because of the internet and such people can become more aware of others all around that world who do it too. They can become more aware about why they feel the need to cut and by identifying the problem help to find a way to stop. I have conducted two personal interviews of females between the ages of 13-18 who wish to remain anonymous.

They went as follows... Why cut? "Many reasons, depression mental unstableness, boredom". Is it addictive? "Yes Very. Actually I started by accident, found a knife and wanted to see it was sharp, turns out its was, lot...

It actually felt really good and I just started doing it more and more". Is it dangerous? "Well sure it is a bit. But I guess that's kind of what draws people to it. But it's not really bad if you use the proper precautions and such.

You don't just go out to the shed and grab a rusty blade and start going at it, unless you " re suicidal and want to get tetanus. Lol " So you " re not suicidal? "Hell No! I don't want to die! You know that expression whatever doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger? It's kind of like that, because with me, it's like when something goes wrong it's my fault and I'm not good enough, and cutting makes me a better, stronger".

Nature or Nurture? "In general I think it depends. For some people this type of behavior comes when they are born... and in their minds they aren't good enough and whatnot. But for some people it's a bad situation or a trauma or something.

For me it was nature I've always been kind of messed up, Its just when I found cutting as an outlet it made me feel more stable and healthy". How long have you been cutting? "I think about a year, not that long". Do you still cut? "Yes Many people have told me to stop, but it makes me feel better so I just keep doing it. I don't want to go back to the way I used to be".

Interview # 2 What is your definition of self mutilation? "Anything to do with cutting, burning yourself... Anything that's painful and is a of your body... and also piercings... I think they can be a type of mutilation. lot " Why cut? "I felt I could take my anger out... and it was an easier escape than talking about shit, or facing reality...

I felt by hurting myself it'd make the Pain go away". Is it addictive? "More than you realize... you cant just stop, its impossible, It's a disease with your mind, its an easy escape you can take, well what you think... and its quite hard to stop". How long have you cut for?

"I started in grade 8 and stopped in grade 10". So you don't cut anymore... why? .".. I recently did cut but we won't count that... but I stopped because I realized all these scars will never fade... they " re just painful reminders of bad times, and what I did to escape".

Do you think it's dangerous? "Yes! It's very dangerous... Even if your intentions are not to commit suicide there's always the one time". Nature or nurture? "Both Have an effect on why people cut... it could be because you had a bad life and it's your only escape or you were born troubled".

Both of the interviewed had written poetry, a common trait of cutters, here are two of the poems written by them. Single MomentA single moment A single blade I trace my veins To remove all my pain There are no more tears And no more rage I've finally been unlocked from this cage It took only a single moment Though I have waited so long.
