Sewing Machines, in the opinion of the seamstress, are one of the most wonderful inventions in history. I remember when I started sewing in the sixth grade with only a needle and some thread at hand. The process of making a simple pillow was tedious and frustrating. My projects continued on like such until my fifteenth birthday, when I received a new Brother Sewing Machine from my grandparents. This gift allowed my creativity to flow on a whole new level. I have a bad habit of not so much as picking up a manual when I am introduced with something new and fabulous. I usually just fiddle around with it until things make sense. This was so with my new machine, as well. I toyed and fingered every nook and cranny all day until I knew what every button and switch was supposed to do. It was surprisingly simple to figure out. First you must prepare the machine for your project.
Guide the thread of your choice through the curves located on the top of the machine, carefully string it through a sewing needle, and secure the needle inside the small slot underneath the overhead light. When you are finished with this, you are ready to set the specific settings depending on what you are sewing. Three knobs on the left side panel indicate: size of stitches, 10 being the largest; distance between stitches, 10 being the largest; and the patterns you want your stitch to be, weather you want zigzags, circles, or plain lines. Once you have all this set, all that's left is to "put your pedal to the metal"! Simply place the fabric under the needle, and depending on the speed you are comfortable with, press your foot on the pedal. Using this machine, you can sew anything from silk pillows to a heavy denim skirt... in almost one fifth the time it would take you to hand sew a certain project.
It allows you to sew with incredible precision, sufficiency, and speed, which makes any project easier and much more enjoyable. Not only is it used individually for personal projects, but sewing machines are used in factories to make brand-name clothing, shoes, towels and cloths, and numerous other things that we take advantage of every day. The invention of the sewing machine has greatly benefited the mass, as well as the individual.
