Iraq's Weapons Of Mass Destruction Stockpile example essay topic

Back in the early 1980's, there was a war between two neighboring countries, Iran and Iraq. At that time, the United States was an ally with Iraq. To help Iraq win their war, the U.S. gave Iraq some biological and chemical weapons. The United States Army also helped train the Iraqi military. The weapons the Iraqi Regime was given were used numerous times on the Iranians and the Kurdish population of Iraq. During the early 1990's, Iraq invaded Kuwait.

The United States did not like the Iraqis invading Kuwait. So the current president of the time, George Bush, sent troops to push the regime out of Kuwait. This was the cause of the Gulf War. Since then the Iraqi Regime and the United States have not been allies. The Central Intelligence Agency claims that they have evidence of Iraq having weapons of mass destruction. The CIA has a 54-page document on Iraq and their weapons of mass destruction facilities.

The United States Secretary of State, Colin Powell, used this document as evidence of Iraq having weapons of mass destruction to pursue the intent of going to war to exterminate Iraq's weapons of mass destruction stockpile along with getting Saddam Hussein out of power. According to the Central Intelligence Agency, Iraq has been producing chemical weapons and biological weapons since the inspections ended in 1998'. Most of the analysts assess Iraq is also reconstructing its nuclear weapons program as well. (Central Intelligence Agency) Did the United States have enough evidence of weapons of mass destruction to go to war with Iraq?

The United States sees themselves as "good guys". To other countries, they don't seem to think so. Is our cause a just cause, or is it because the United States is a big bully and wants everything their way? I think that the United States did not have enough evidence to go to war with Iraq, and that we are over there for the wrong reasons. Further more, I think Bush just wanted to start a war so he could repay the multi-million dollar corporations that bought his way into office. By starting a war, the corporations would be able to produce more goods to support it.

Thus, gaining business (money) from the United States funds. This way, the government is out the money, not George W. Bush himself. This is all made possible using offshore bank accounts in places like Puerto Rico. There, the money is neither detectable nor taxable, and George W. gets away without being accused or questioned.

I also think the war is just a gimmick to keep G.W. Bush in office. As long as the United States is at war, a new president cannot be appointed or elected. People believe that if one country uses weapons of mass destruction, that everyone who got weapons of mass destruction will use them. But in 1946 one country did use weapons of mass destruction. That country was the United States. It was during World War 2 that the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan.

The bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The two bombs killed maimed, or injured more than 200,000 people. (Buchanan, New Book of Knowledge 308) After the bombs were dropped, no other country used any weapons of mass destruction on one another. This was the first time weapons of mass destruction were used. They were the only ones used for almost 20 years.

During the 1960's, the United States used chemical weapons against the Vietnamese and Vietcong. They used a chemical weapon known as Agent Orange. It caused many casualties. The affects of the chemical weapon still effects hundreds of thousands of military personal and civilians. (cyberdyaryo) Iraq is not the only one with weapons of mass destruction. The Iraqi's might have only used the weapons only against the Iranians and Kurds in their war, but the United States has used weapons of mass destruction more than a couple of times against various enemies. The only people that we should be worried about oursleves.

The Central Intelligence Agency has records of every chemical and biological weapon ever used in Iraq. There statistics are unclear on how many people the Iraqi Regime have slaughtered with the chemical and biological weapons the United States supplied them. From August of 1983 to March of 1988, the Iraqi's have only used chemical weapons ten times. During those five years there was one year that the Iraqi Regime did not even use chemical weapons from March of 1984 through March of 1985. Then there was almost another year, between March of 1985 through February of 1986, that they didn't use chemical weapons.

During their attacks on the Iranian people the Regime killed around 25,500 people, some of the information the Central Intelligence Agency gives is unclear at how many Iranians the Regime killed. I wonder sometimes how reliable the Central Intelligence Agency's information is. I don't know how they got this information. If it were from spies how trustworthy are the spies? (Central Intelligence Agency) After four years of claiming that Iraq had only conducted "small-scale, defensive" research, the Iraqi officials admitted to inspectors in 1995 to the production and weaponizing of biological weapons. They only told inspectors this after the defection of Husayn Kamil, former director of Iraq's military industries.

They never actually used a biological weapon on a person; they only did open-air testing of biological weapons. They only tested in four different places and over the span of three years. Even though the United States gave Iraq the biological weapons in the early 1980's, they never used them. They only tested them many years after. The United States government is responsible for what Iraq was doing in the 1980's, and now they want to clean up Iraq before the situation between the United States and Iraq gets out of hand. In other words, the United States government screwed up big time.

(Central Intelligence Agency) There was a group of journalists that was shown around a production facility 35 Km. south of Baghdad. The arms inspectors visited the facility and had given it the all clear mark. This facility produces an industrial chemical called Aniline. The journalists showed the plant on television and it showed that there were leaking pipes in the building. If there were leaking pipes in the building, the agent that was being produced is not a lethally toxic weapon of mass destruction. (Bancroft-Hinchey) Television is a factor of entertainment and teaching for the American lifestyle.

Most of the things we see on the news we can believe. So if we were shown a chemical plant that had leaking pipes in it, and was told that it produced an industrial chemical, most people would believe it. During the Gulf War, we bombed most of Iraq's biological weapons and chemical weapons production facilities. A large portion of their stockpile was destroyed. Through 1998, United Nations Special Commissions was able to dispose of large quantities of munitions, agent, precursors and production equipment not destroyed in combat. Iraq can resume production of both chemical weapons and biological weapons in a very short time (months) from civilian facilities.

(Chipman) But Iraq knows that if they do this, the United Nations and the United States would know within days of start up. If President Hussein were a very ignorant person he would start up production. Since he has a nation to run, he would more than likely not start up production due to potential invasion and destruction of his country. The American government is bull-headed, it only thinks about the potential danger of another attack on our homeland. I believe the exact term I heard George W. Bush use in his Declaration of War speech on television was "preempt". In esse sence, if I go out and murder my neighbor, it is ok.

As long as my actions were preempt. That is basically how I intemperate George W.'s way of thinking. By keeping weapons of mass destruction on our soil, it is kind of creating another attack on our homeland. This time it would be ourselves to blame. By having said that we are responsible for the current situation in Iraq, I believe that President Hussein did follow the rules that the United Nations set up for every nation to follow, and that he did disarm.

This evidence should prove that the United States did not have enough evidence to go to war with Iraq.
