Lord of the Flies Chapter two Fire on the Mountain Setting Characters Storyline Setting On the island, at the beach and on the top of the mountain later that afternoon Characters Ralph -The chief, leader, whom blows the conch for a second meeting -Confirms to everyone that they are in fact on a deserted island -Announces their needs (ex. Hunters, without letting anyone else speak, dictatorship) -Establishes rules (only the person with the conch is allowed to speak) -Proclaims that while they wait to be rescued they might as well have fun -Constantly putting Piggy and the little ones down -Had the bright idea of making a fire with lots of smoke, at the top of the mountain to help them getting rescued Characters Jack -Leader -Proposes to form an army for hunting -Is eager to kill -Has the idea of taking Piggy's specs to light the fire -Him and his choir will be responsible for hunting and keeping the fire going and keeping a look out for any signs of ships Characters Piggy -not respected by Ralph, Jack and others -Just -The intellectual force of the group, always thinks ahead -The adult of the group -Protects and defends the younger's boys, the weaker ones (the boy whom spoke about the snake) -Used his specs to light the fire -Worried and think they should be more careful Characters The snake boy -young shy 6-year-old boy who claims to have seen a "snake beastie thing" in the dark woods -Proclaims it will come back and eat him -Laughed at by Ralph (there is no such thing as a beastie snake thing, it's nonsense) -Protected by Piggy The twins, Sam and Eric, Simon, Roger and Maurice helped with the fire. Storyline During this chapter the second meeting is held While, him, Jack and Simon went exploring, Ralph confirms that they are by themselves on an island surrounded by water Ralph already starts to establish rules (whoever wants to speak has to have the conch) We learn that their plane burst into flames and they landed on this island Storyline During the meeting a little boy wants to speak, but Ralph ignores his request, till Piggy interferes The little boys claims to have seen a "big snake beastie thing" Ralph, immediately tells him to be quiet and says that is nonsense Then, Ralph has the idea to make a fire to help the rescuers find them Storyline Jack goes completely ballistic to the word "fire" and leads everyone to the mountain The fire suddenly grows bigger and stronger Piggy, becomes afraid, afraid of setting the island on fire Ralph and Jack seem careless, and Ralph complains that there are too much flames but not enough smoke Storyline Angry and frustrated, Piggy finally has everyone's attention and says to Ralph before attempting a fire, they should instead build shelters first He goes on saying that the little boy who spoke about the snake, is missing. Chapter three Huts on the Beach Setting Characters Storyline Setting On the island, on a trail, where Jack is desperately hunting, days later after their arrival And a little further away, where two shaky huts take place, are found Ralph and Simon Characters Jack -Hungry for power -Need to kill -.".. eyes that in frustration seem nearly mad". (p. 48) -Desperate to find something to hunt -Realizes that the pigs must lie up at the top of the mountain when the sun is too hot, in the shade resting during the heat.

-He then is determined to find and kill that pig Characters Ralph -Annoyed -Has been working for days on building a suitable shelter -Jealous of Jack (Jack enjoys hunting, while he is stuck building huts) Characters Simon -Has been working on building shelters with Ralph -Ralph called him "queer and funny", thinking he was at the beach, but Simon was just behind him -Has wandered off into the forest Others are bathing, having fun, eating and playing Storyline Everyone was suppose to work on building shelters, except for Jack and his choir who were assigned to hunt Only Ralph and Simon are working, the others are enjoying themselves Ralph, working for many days now, accuses Jack of not bringing back any meat Jack says next time he "might kill" Storyline Ralph says they need shelters for when it rains and "we need shelters because of the-" Jack then goes on saying how the little ones have nightmares about the beastie snake thing They both agree that they need a home Jack goes on to confess to Ralph, that "If you " re hunting sometimes you catch yourself feeling as if... you " re not hunting, but being hunted, as if something's behind you all the time in the jungle". (p. 53) Storyline Ralph replies in saying that the best thing to do is for them to be rescued Then, feeling insecure, Ralph accuses Jack of not making enough smoke for the fire Also, Ralph accuses Jack of having fun working, while him and Simon have to stay there and build huts As readers, we now sense jealousy building between the two boys Storyline "They looked at each other, baffled, in love and hate. All the warm salt water of bathing pool and the shouting and splashing and laughing were only just sufficient to bring them together again". (p. 55) While Jack and Ralph were discussing, Simon had wandered off, alone into the forest, ignoring the sudden night fall. The End.
