Leadership is an important aspects of any society. The nature, man inherited from his fall, requires there to be rules and rulers. True leadership can only be effective when supported by the majority. Human nature can also cause conflicts to arise over who should have power and what that person should have authority over. Therefore, Division is born when these conflicts emerge, causing chaos to erupt. William Golding's The Lord of the Flies is a prime example of humanity's need for authority. A society is formed when a plane full of English boys goes down. The boys are stranded on a deserted island without the presence of adults. The inevitable need for leadership arises once the boys have congregated.
Two of the older boys, Ralph and Jack, appear to be the ones most suitable as leaders. Ralph is portrayed as the upright, democratic leader, who is the dynamic character, willing to listen to others and heed their advice. Jack is the selfish one, given to human nature and pride, never willing to change but only following his way. The clan of boys vote on which of the two should receive authority, choosing Ralph to be their guide. Ralph is a hard working leader who gives the people a voice.
Many of the boys eventually stop listening to Ralph and turn to Jack. Jack begins to lead his own sect which eventually turns into the majority of the clan. Jack rules over the boys, stepping the group in ritualistic and immoral behavior. During Jacks reign two of the boys are murder and a hunt is on to find and kill Ralph. In the story Ralph symbolizes the good nature of man and true democracy, whereas Jack symbolizes anarchy, chaos, and the fall of man. In conclusion man most be lead, for the demise of a people can many times be found in their higher authorities.
Humans have a sinful nature and must be bound by rules. In order for rules to be followed the people must have a say in the laws and leader they will be subjected to.
