John Proctor example essay topic

566 words
There is no doubt that John Proctor was in a moral dilemma. Either he lies and says that he was in on all that witchcraft or he tells the truth. Which they may think is a lie, and he will still hang. He just isn't able to think right. He asks Elizabeth "Would you give them such a lie?" She didn't answer though. If John Proctor were to lie and say he was with the devil, he would be able to save his life.

He would also to be with Elizabeth and the upcoming child. When deputy Danforth asks him if he had anything to do with the devil, he does lie. He told them he did, but as Danforth asks if he saw certain people with the devil like Rebecca Nurse and Martha Corey Proctor said he didn't. That was the truth though. As he asked Proctor those Questions, Proctor doesn't know what to say.

He believed though that Rebecca Nurse was more innocent then he. At that time, he would rather get her out of the rope than get himself out. I feel that Proctor should lie and get out of hanging. He is innocent, not from having anything to do with witchcraft cases.

Maybe his signature will hang on the church door but he would be still alive. He did though confess but he then got mad and ripped up the paper with his signature and said "I have already confessed myself! Is there no good penance but it should be public? God does not need my signature nails upon the church! God sees my name; God knows how black my sins are! It is enough!" (142) The final choice John Proctor made was up to him, and he made it.

He would rather deny the charges and hang then lie and live. That is done as a true Christian. I agree with Proctors precise decision. Was Proctor committed to the Puritan Society? Definitely, for all the work he had done for the church, he was. The only reason why he hadn't gone to church has been the Parris is acting like he is God.

He wants everything so he whines for it until he gets it. He demanded for the gold candle sticks for instance. The Proctors two babies had not got baptized because they didn't want Parris touching their babies. As John says, "I like it not that Mr. Parris should lay his hand upon my baby". (65) I think that everybody is getting tired of Parris. Elizabeth thinks that they were being too hard on him though.

She says "I think maybe we have been too hard with Mr. Parris". (66) Proctor also may had forgotten his one commandment, the one he violated by committing adultery yet he is still committed to the society of Puritan. Compared to everyone, Proctor may be an angel. The other people lying and playing games. The Proctors next to Reverend Hale may be the second best people in Salem. John Proctor is definitely over Abigail.

He has been trying to regain the confidence back from Elizabeth ever since by walking past Abigail's home at night.
