While giving his testimony, he was asked if he saw anyone with the devil. Proctor said, The nit is proved why must I say it I speak my own sins; I cannot judge another. You are the high court your word is good enough I tell them that I confessed myself; say proctor broke to his knees and wept like a woman; say what you will but my name I cannot! Proctor continues on to say that, Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name I have given you my soul; leave my name!
Proctors test left him only with two paths. Proctor may lie and loose the good name that he has built up for himself and his family or, tell the truth and live in nothing but lies for all of his life. In Proctors final decision he tells the truth and dies for what he thinks is right, not for what he knows is a lie. 320.
