How can a guy who doesn't like his picture taken, doesn't like to be the center of attention, and doesn't like being in front of the camera, find his way into the bright lights of Hollywood? Camera shy Johnny Depp has developed a successful career as a handsome and thoughtful actor who craves variety and thrives on creativity, even though being in the limelight is not his cup of tea. Depp describes himself, "I am recluse, like a spider, a very gracious and respectful person with slow and soft speech, and lunar movements". Johnny Depp has spun his web in Hollywood catching the hearts of many throughout his acting career, but finding a comfortable place to start wasn't easy. Born on June 9th, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, he and his family moved in his seventh year to Florida. With his grandfather's death and his parents' divorce, young Johnny was never the studious teenager.

He spent most of his time playing guitar, and before he was old enough to enter bars he was performing in them, with a band called "Flame". The band later changed its name to "Kids" and toured the Florida nightclub scene. They soon landed a spot as the opening act of the Iggy Pop tour. Two years later the band relocated to Los Angeles.

Shortly after arriving, Depp realized the kids were swimming in a deep sea of wannabe rock stars looking for a shot in the music industry. It was then that Depp stumbled his way into an acting career in which he had no idea would bring out his true self off and on the stage. After being introduced to Nicholas Cage, who liked his look and saw potential star quality, he was cast in his feature film debut, Nightmare on Elm Street, but Depp had higher expectations for his acting career than teenage thriller movies. He enrolled in L.A.'s Loft Studio acting school to sharpen his acting skills. After completion he landed the lead role in the television series 21 Jump Street. During the show, teens and tabloids helped build his career, as he became a teen heartthrob, a part Depp did not want to play.

It was then that Depp wanted to spin his own web and establish himself as the different and gifted actor he is today. Depp was given the opportunity to prove his worth as the eccentric title role in Tim Burton's Edward Scissor Hands. He went on to deliver a quality dramatic performance in What's Eating Gilbert Grape and was also honored in taking a role opposite Al Pacino in Donnie Bras co. Johnny is selective in the roles he chooses to accept. He runs from under rated scripts and has packaged a repiore of serious and well-written films.

Depp has chosen his roles well and has been able to bring each character something special. Depp explains, "With any part you play, there is a certain amount of yourself in it. There has to be, otherwise it's just not acting. It's lying".

In the past years, Depp has more than proven himself with roles like the ones in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Astronauts Wife, Sleepy Hollow, and currently Once Upon A Time In Mexico, and Pirates of the Caribbean, the biggest hit of his twenty year career. He also experimented with directing when he directed and produced his own movie The Brave. With Depp's critical acclaim as an actor, he has been honored with the 1990 ShoW est Male Star of Tomorrow award, the 1996 London Critics Circle Actor of the Year award for his performance in Ed Wood, and the 1998 Honorary Cesar. He has been nominated for several Golden Globes and received his star on "The Walk of Fame" on November 16, 1999. Outside of acting, Depp owns his own nightclub called "The Viper Room" where he shows his face quite often. His face has also appeared in numerous magazines and television programs.

He was chose by People magazine as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world, voted sexiest male movie star by Empire, and named one of E!'s top 20 entertainers of 2001. After his big success with Pirates of the Caribbean, Depp has been working on numerous upcoming films, which include J.M. Barrie's Neverland, a drama in which he plays the author of Peter Pan, and Secret Window, an adaptation of a Stephen King novella. He has been asked to reunite with Bein cio Del Toro to create The Rum Diaries, another Hunter S. Thompson adventure. Another possibility is reuniting with Tim Burton to remake Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Depp sees this as the ultimate challenge, "You " ll never escape that memory that's seared into your consciousness of Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. It was really amazing to watch as a kid growing up, and I've watched it with my kids.
