Josie Alibrandi (Pia Miranda) is torn between her two cultures. Josie believes - courtesy of her Italian Nonna - that she and her mother (Greta Scac chi) are cursed. Nonna constantly drums Italian culture into Josie's head, but the stuck-up racist girls at Josie's school keep telling Josie that she is an outsider because she is a wog. Couple that with Josie being torn between two guys - a boy from the wrong side of the tracks who wears ripped jeans and rides a motorbike and the premier's son, a well-to-do young gentleman with a deep secret.
Then, Josie is torn between finding out everything she can about her father (Anthony La Paglia), whom she has just met, or totally ignoring him. Oh, and it is HSC time. It is a big year for Josie. These are all the real teen issues, and Looking for Alibrandi at least has the guts to deal with them.
Based on the bestselling novel by Melina March etta, Alibrandi has a lot to live up to. It is on the school curriculum throughout the nation and there are probably no teenagers at the moment over the age of 16 who have not read the book. It is with utter delight then, that I can say Kate Woods has given her audience exactly what they wanted - an excellent adaptation of a popular novel that goes against the grain of all teen films at the moment. There are no sinister killers in this cast.
The prom scene is short but sweet and the whole film does not revolve around it. Issues such as the pressures of school, cultural differences, suicide and finding your identity, amongst others, are raised and tackled quite well. by blue vixen.
