Through out the text Montana 1948 written by Larry Watson the focus of the book is mainly centered around the Hayden family and the events that transpire around them. In the family there are a number of relationships that form and have already existed. Just to name a few relationships in the family: Wes, Frank and Julian, how Julian favours Frank over Wes. David and the lust he experienced for his Auntie.

The way Julian pushes Wes around. All these relationships are all very negative and there The Hayden's look like functional and ordinary family but when you get right down to it they are an extremely dysfunctional family that have there fair share of woes and troubles. Wes, Frank and Julian they are the three main Hayden men in the family Julian the father of Wes and Frank and the has been sheriff of Mercer County. Julian is a very powering man and feels he needs to have power constantly, he is a highly respected man of Mercer County but Julian would also do anything to save the creditability of his name. Frank is favored by Julian over Wes, Julian isn't as proud of Wes that he is of Frank. Frank as accomplished much in his life, he has developed a well-respected name for himself and is widely known by the community.

People come to him from far and wide to seek his advice. Wes is just known as the other son the sheriff of Mercer County, Wes never wanted to be the sheriff of Mercer County it was passed down to him by his Father. Wes had studied to be a lawyer he was never interested in being sheriff. Frank was loved much more by Julian "but Frank was all this and more. He was handsome - dark, wavy hair, a jaw chiseled on such precise angles it seemed to conform to some geometric law, he was tall and well built, but with an athletic grace.

He had been a star athlete in high school and college, and he was a genuine war hero, complete with decorations and commendations" it looks like Frank is handsome a great athlete a war hero he is just the perfect male. "Grand father announced now I would like to bring my son up here"My father was standing next to me when Grand father said that. My father did not move. Grandfather did not say "My son the veteran" or "My son the war hero" or "My son the solider".

He simply said my son and why wouldn't the county sheriff be called upon to make a small speech" So it is quiet obvious that Julian does see Frank as a Great asset to his name and favours him over Wes". "There is not a community in the country that wouldn't be proud to have him. But he came back to us. My son. Come back to us" my father kept searching for paper to pick up" Wes is embarrassed and intimidated by his brother and does not feel he is to his equivalent. This next relationship is an awkward one which should not happen and which is a very perverted one.

It is the relationship of David and his Aunt Gloria. David experiences different emotions towards his aunt such as the way he feels about her and what he thinks of her. But mainly he is experiencing lust towards her. He thought she was a great looking woman. "Gloria my uncle's wife was the prettiest woman I have ever seen"It was the shame again that Sunday that kept me looking at Aunt Gloria during our meal. As Gloria leaned forward to take a plate of tomatoes from my Grandmother, I smelt my aunt's perfume again.

But the lush sweet floral scent - so out of place in the rough timbered room and among all those odors of food - did not excite me this time. This time it made me so sad I wanted to cry". The smell of his Aunt usually excites David but I think that he is starting to realize that this is a grown married lady. She is married to his Uncle and he was having dirty impure thoughts about her. Julian, Wes's Father, he gave Wes the job as the sheriff. He is the one that forced Wes in to taking a job that he didn't want in the first place.

And by giving Wes the job Julian thinks that he has power over Wes and his actions. When frank was caught Julian did not want Frank to be arrested and told Wes not to. "Then why have you got him locked up, this is your brother my son" Julian is willing to do any thing to save Frank and give him the easy way out. In conclusion the three main relationships in the Hayden family are pointing out that this family is just as wired and dysfunctional as any other family.
