Just Kind example essay topic
Before all that in the beginning of the book when he is up on that hill he's waiting for some sort of goodbye and he just had a flash back of a good time and I guess that's the kind of good bye he had in mind that he was waiting for because really I was not sure what he meant when he said I needed some sort of goodbye it seems like he had some sort of empty feelings for the place like he was not really comfortable almost like he wants a goodbye but he never really had anything in his heart to say goodbye to just another school. It doesn't seem that he has a very good tolerance for people either because there is a kid that came into his room without even asking because he is probably lonely. but everyone calls him Ackley because I think that's his last name but he was kind of annoying Holden by touching his things also he is kind of trying to annoy him by calling him Ackley kid even though he is two years older than him because Holden is 16 and Ackley is eighteen and he doesn't like to be called Ackley kid it makes him mad. When he is in the room you can tell that Holden doesn't have good concentration because he kept trying to read his book but he feels like he has to look up and watch Ackley constantly so as Ackley talks to him is he kind of sarcastic and cocky trying to give him the hint that he really doesn't want him around but he doesn't get it and to Holden Ackley seems retarded as always Holden is pointing out mistakes and his flaws even though he is getting kicked out of the same school that Ackley is going to he feels superior to him. Maybe he has more street smarts and less school smarts. Although he does kind of compliment his roommate which is a change he says that he is very generous and try's to give an example to Ackley of his roommates generosity he just blows it of like he doesn't get it and Holden is only trying to show him what a good guy he can be. But it seems like it is frustrating him just trying to explain his point or what he means to Ackley and there again an example of his tolerance and temper or it actually seems like more of an anxiety thing.
So i am not quite sure about Holden yet because right now he just seems like a kid with a lot of problems but nothing mentally but again I am only starting this book so I still have yet to learn more about him. Chapters 4-6 Ok I already said how when I was reading the first few chapters I didn't really notice any symptoms of him being a little messed up in the head except for a few things such as his tolerance for other people like his social skills and it seemed like he criticized everyone and everything they did so far except his roommate Stradlater who he says is a generous person yet the way he thinks about Stradlater quickly changes in the 6th chapter but I don't want to jump around from the 6th to the 4th to the 5th and all over the place so I will talk about that later and start with the fourth chapter. So in the fourth chapter I am pretty sure it takes place in the can with Holden Stradlater and Ackley which I am still not quite sure what he is referring to when he says the can but I think its like the bathroom or some kind of shower room or something I don't know but anyways during the whole time they are in there Stradlater is shaving for ever and Holden starts to do the criticizing thing again and starts to talk about he is a secret slob and that he seems clean because he gets cleaned up good but really he is a slob and just nobody sees it including his rusty blade that he shaves with I am not sure why but it seems like that blade bothers Holden so much because he mentions it like a couple times I think I don't know I think it is because he is doing that thing where he points out every ones faults and bad things about them but he cant find that many bad things about him so he just keeps saying whatever he can to himself but he doesn't seem to bash Ackley that much all of the sudden although he does get mad when he is laying on his pillow because of his acne and stuff. In the 5th chapter something happens that I don't understand well first off I had to say there is finally two people that Holden brings into the book that he doesn't criticize and judge etc. 24/7 and one of them is a girl I guess a girl named Jane that he always used to play checkers with and you can tell that he kind of has a thing for her before the fight between him and Stradlater happens because right before Stradlater is finally cleaned up and is leaving he says hey don't tell Jane I got kicked out because I don't think that he wants her to think low of him and to kind of remind her of him he tell Stradlater a message to give to her something between themselves kind of like an inside joke but not a joke. He wanted Stradlater to ask her if she still keeps all of her kings in the back row but Stradlater doesn't tell her anyways because he is all about other stuff.
The other person that is brought into the book isn't really special or anything just kind of another person and it is some guy that he goes to the movies with and I am still not sure why but he invited Ackley an he doesn't even like him. Well actually I was wrong when I said that he doesn't criticize this new person because he talks about how 3 he wouldn't want to sit beside him in the movie theatres any ways because he laughs about stuff that isn't even funny to him and he thinks that its his friends fault but maybe he just doesn't have a good sense of humor. Then the big drama part of chapter six is when Stradlater and Holden get into a fight because they are already mad at each other for some argument I forget but he says that he showed Jane (the girl Holden likes) a time in the car and Holden gets up and try's to punch him in the toothbrush but misses and hits him in the side of the head and 2 seconds after that Stradlater is on top of him then Holden keeps running his mouth so Stradlater punches him in the but then tell him to go get cleaned up you can tell that Stradlater cares about him though there is going to probably be awkwardness between them. Catcher in the Rye Chapters 7-9 Chapters seven through nine were interesting. Holden wakes Ackley up real late at night and tells him about how him and Stradlater got into a fight but he does not tell Ackley what it was about he just tells him that he had a little tiff with him and its stupid it seems like he wants Ackley to want to know what happened but he does not want to tell him I do not know how to explain it but its just dumb.
Then later on he wakes Ackley up just for the fun of it which I do not get because he wakes him up asking if he would have to be catholic to join a monastery which I do not know what that is but its like he just wakes him up to get on his nerves or to get him worked up because then he kind of dishes his religion so yea but I think the reason he woke him up was because he was lonely and nobody else was awake and he could not get Jane off of his mind. Then in chapter eight he decides he just going to go wander around in the middle of the night which is just totally weird and what I do not understand Is that he does not wash himself up either he just go with the blood all over his face but then after he is already at the train station he tries to wash it of and its like what the heck I do not see why he did not just do it while he was at his dorm thing. Something else that I thought was interesting yet its something I do not think I will ever figure out is why when the mom gets on the train he tells her god things about her son at school that are total lies and Holden hates that kid and he says good things about him so that his mom is proud of him I just do not understand you would think that he would tell her a lot of bad things about him to make his life worse. Another thing that I noticed is that the student's mom is one of the first people he does not constantly judge and point out their flaws like he accepts her.
Ok the phone booth thing I thought was kind of weird because he goes in there and he thinks back to himself all the people he could call and he ends up not calling anybody but he spends twenty minutes in there which is kind of a long time to be thinking of people that he could call after midnight. Then he gets all horned up and tries calling some whore for sex obviously but he says cocktails but whatever and the thing is he is calling her like 2: 00 in the morning. And he starts talking her like he knows some guy and he really does not he thinks he might get on her good side though because she seems to like her because she gets happier when she remembers her name. First off in the beginning of chapter ten he talks ALOT about his kid sister Phoebe about how she is so smart and pretty and stuff etc. and to me it seems like she is the only one he really accepts and doesn't criticize etc. and I thought that for a moment Jane was like that too like he didn't constantly point out her mistakes but later on when he is talking about her in chapter 12 he does. Anyways it almost seems like he is afraid of everyone in his family except for phoebe its like either he just 100 doesn't accept them or maybe its because he thinks that they don't accept him so his sister phoebe is the only one that he really feels like actually letting in to his life and actually getting close to. It is really kind of sad actually because it is like besides her he is all on his own and has nobody.
Later on he goes to the club or what ever it is and he sees those girls that are sitting in the table or booth whatever and I think he was thinking he could get some Gatorade or something since 200 he couldn't get that one prostitute that he called in chapter nine. You could tell that he seemed really lonely and then he asks one of the girls with blonde hair to dance and he just does not seem like the kind of person that likes to dance as soon as I read that I was really surprised because it seems like he really doesn't like to do anything and he really doesn't seem to like people and usually when you dance your dancing with someone well I don't know how to explain it but Holden's character just doesn't seem 300 to be a dancer because of how nonsocial he is etc... Later on he thinks about Jane Gallagher again and goes on about her forever and I thought it was kind of weird how he was talking about when she was crying and he was like kissing her everywhere but her lips and how they were like so close and stuff but they never even really did anything. And it definitely surprises me that he got that close to her and never even did anything when here he is trying to get some Gatorade from a girl at the club 400 and he tried hooking up with a prostitute for the night. And when he talks about her crying and she never told him what the big deal was with that one guy it makes me really want to know what the big deal was I hope that later on in the book he meets up with her and she tells him. Though that the cab thing was kind of funny how the cab driver like freaked out about the thing with the lake and the ducks or whatever.
The cab driver reminded me of a little kid when he like 500 said his last words to Holden and like drove off really fast before he could say anything back to him like he had to have the last word I don't know it was just funny to me. Then when he gets to the other club thing to see his friend who plays the piano and instead he ends up seeing one of his brothers old friends and I bet that would kind of make him mad because he doesn't really like his brother anyways and having to here all about him and talk about him and I am sure he 600 feels kind of used. 604 Catcher in the Rye Chapters 13-15 Ok in chapter thirteen I already start to notice that when he is talking about something or he gets on a topic he stays on that topic for a while or he talks about whatever he was talking about for like ever. For example when he talks about how he was walking forty blocks he talks about all this other stuff that has to do with him waling and like when he starts to say that he is kind of yellow and gets on the subject of that kid stealing his gloves and what he would do about it and he just talks about it forever and ever. What was weird though is that he talks abut how he is yellow and that he wouldn't hit the kid but when he was in the room with Stradlater and Stradlater was talking about Jane Gall agar he just stood right up and punched him on the side of the head or something I don't know I forget where but yea that doesn't make any sense to me its like he kind of lied or maybe he forgot all about the whole little fight thing with Stradlater. Ok there is one thing in particular that bothers the crap out of me is that when he gets hooked up with the prostitute because of that pimp guy on th 4 e elevator but anyways when he was up in his room waiting on the prostitute he was all nervous you could tell and he was thinking about how there were times where he almost had some Gatorade with girls but he never did because something always ruined it or they said stop and he always did but yea he was like all sure that he was going to have Gatorade then and then when the prostitute gets up there alls they do is talk and he doesn't want to have sex with her at all and he was talking about how he was ready to and this was his time to get some practice and he never does anything I just don't get it its like he Is thinking two different ways like how he wants to be around people yet he is pushing them away and it was like he wanted to have sex with her but then he just doesn't when she finally gets there.
Later on he says that he is an atheist yet he said he still wan 6 ted to pray and that doesn't make any sense to me maybe he does it just because that what everyone else does so he thinks that he should do it its like that one thing we were talking about earlier like he if the world but he is in it and maybe if he prays like what other people do he thinks he is more in the world because he is like the other people. And I read about him getting beat up by the pimp guy Maurice and I don't get what his deal is he is always talking about how much money he has with him so I don't understand why he didn't just pay him the 5 dollars its only 5 dollars. And I thought it was kind of funny how he was talking to the nuns I mean nuns just don't seem like the kind of people he would be talking to and to me it seemed like he totally changed his attitude when he was talking to them like he turned all nice out of no where like everything was just great. Catcher in the Rye Chapters 16-18 Well in chapter sixteen he talks about the nuns again and actually I am happy that he finally found someone that he likes because he is not a real people person.
When he talks about going to meet up with that girl he acts like its something he has to do and does not want to like I do not think that he really wants to go see them. And I don't know why he wanted to go and search for that music thing for his sister and I mean even I he would have bought it what would he 100 have done with it he would have had to drag it around all day while he was on his little date with that girl. And I was kind of amazed with all the weird words he calls people and comes up with and stuff he finally got another one and I didn't think it was possible but he started to say that the one girl would leave and go somewhere swanky to eat and he said that he could just tell that those nuns that he was with never go anywhere swanky. I don't know why but I just can 200 not stand it when he says stuff like that it bothers the crap out of me because I never know what those words mean. In chapter 17 right in the beginning is another example of why I think that Holden always turns everything into a kind of depressing sort of thing or he makes it more sad than what it really is.
Because in the beginning he starts talking about the girls legs and how some are good and others are bad and stuff but the he says it is kind of depressing because he wanders what is going to 300 happen to all of them I mean everything was going fine before but then he goes and tries to make something depressing about it. Another thing I thought was extremely weird in this chapter is that well of course he is always bottling everything in and always hiding stuff and never telling the truth but when he is talking to sally he just comes out of no where and starts telling her all this weird stuff about how he hates being in that city and al the phonies and stuff its just not like him. I think that chapter 18 400 was extremely boring all he did was talk crap about the show thing pretty much the whole chapter I did not find it interesting at all what so ever. 29 Sorry no chapter 18 through 21 Catcher in the Rye chapters 22-24 Ok in chapter twenty two right in the beginning he says that she (phoebe) is ostracizing the hell out of him. Then on the next page he asks her who gave her that haircut and she said none of your business and he was thinking to himself saying that she can be pretty snotty. So yea before I thought phoebe was the perfect one because he always pointed out every ones faults and hated everyone besides her and everything but now she is ignoring him by burying her head under the pillow so he is not getting the attention that he wants and he starts to think bad things about her to.
Throughout the book he does this with everyone but you are not to sure why but now after reading this part I think its enough evidence to say that it all is a way for him to cope with lack of attention. This actually is a very important thing in the book because the one person he talks about the whole time he is away from her and the only person that is right to him and is perfect etc. now are not giving him the attention that he wants and he is starting to do what he does with everyone. Ah ha then just a little bit later I thought it was funny how when he tells phoebe about how the school is full of phonies and stuff and they wouldn't ever want to have Ackley come in their room just because he was pimply or whatever but really he was one of the people who didn't like him and didn't want him around. I guess Holden is right when he talks about how quick and smart Phoebe is I mean she even sounds smarter than him and when he was talking about how there is nothing to like about Pence and then she says I think your problem is that you don't like anything and she tells him to name one thing that he likes and he can only think of like two good things actually during that time I was even trying to look back and think of stuff that he liked and I couldn't think of anything. Then in Chapter twenty three he calls Mr. Antolini which is a teacher and he is going to be staying with him so I am kind of excited to see what is going to happen or how this is going to work and now that we are bringing a new character into the book I am sure that holden got a lot of crap to talk about him.
You can also tell that Phoebe has a little bit of Holden in her in this chapter because she was doing what he does how he always freaks out over the littlest things like how she was mad about the lady breathing on her food and not only that but she is a good liar because she lies to her mom about the cigarette smell and stuff. Ok in chapter twenty four he talks a little more about this Mr. Antolini character so you find out that he Is sort of like a friend to Holden and his family so he is not just some teacher he also knows him out of school too. Catcher in the rye Chapter 25-26 Ok first off I think the end sucked it is just not what I have been waiting for. Although I was really surprised when he smacked phoebe it kind of freaked me out. And well I thought something of why he wanted to meet her at the museum during her lunch brake and not anywhere else I think that there is a connection there because he likes phoebe and she is a little kid and he is like he doesn't want little kids to change and he goes and meets her at the museum because everything there always stays the same and never changes. Oh and to me it seemed like when he saw phoebe riding the marry go round thing or whatever he all the sudden missed everyone that he hated the first thing I can think of is what if he just saw something that was just so good and pure in his eyes that it just fixed him and he doesn't have that problem anymore like where he hated everything like all the sudden it all just went away I don't know the way he just changed his mind about everything in the entire book just by that little thing really amazed me and made me think like what happened and the best thing I can think of is because he saw phoebe.
And that is all I really have to say about all of that I really just could not think anything more of it. Entire review "Holden doesn't have good concentration because he kept trying to read his book but he feels like he has to look up and watch Ackley constantly" that was something I said from my first paper I was skimming through to get ideas and main themes I could write about but I think I am going to write about the whole book in general and I am not following one of those prompts because I think that it is easier for someone to write what they want to write which will allow them to open up more in their writing rather than being told what to write and having to follow guidelines. I got off topic very easy ok back to the thing I said in the beginning of the book I thought it was funny because you told us before we started reading the book that he has a problem and I was trying to point it out the whole time and trying to figure out what his problem was but it wasn't showing a lot so I was just picking out things because I could not find his problem but that was until I said "Holden Ackley seems retarded as always Holden is pointing out mistakes and his flaws" that's when I noticed what his real problem was BUT I did not know that that was his problem is was just something about him until more towards the end of the book he never likes anything then it totally comes out in the last few chapters when his little sister says he does not like anything and he cant really think of anything that he like besides ally and he is dead". . Although he does kind of compliment his roommate which is a change he says that he is very generous and try's to give an example to Ackley of his roommates generosity he just blows it of like he doesn't get it and Holden is only trying to show him what a good guy he can be" and there how Ackley was acting was an example of how THAT person acts that I was talking about where they area not getting anywhere without help although they wont let you help them without throwing a fit or something". although I have realized that so far most of the problems in his life are around him his surroundings not him like the people around him and the things he had to deal with" that is something else I said that is not right because now that I have read the whole book it is not his surroundings or anything around him he just MAKES it seem like that he makes his surrounding effect his life more than they need to. In the 5th chapter there is finally two people that Holden brings into the book that he doesn't criticize and judge etc.
24/7 and one of them is a girl I guess a girl named Jane that he always used to play checkers with but then he says she has a messed up mouth when she talks and you can tell that he kind of had a thing for her right off the bat even though he didn't see her forever because he got all offensive about stradlater getting sexy with her. Chapters seven through nine were interesting. Holden wakes Ackley up real late at night and tells him about how him and Stradlater got into a fight but he does not tell Ackley what it was about he just tells him that he had a little tiff with him and its stupid it seems like he wants Ackley to want to know what happened but he does not want to tell him and I thought that was about gay and a half. in chapter eight he decides he just going to go wander around in the middle of the night which is just totally weird and what I do not understand Is that he does not wash himself up either he just go with the blood all over his face its like he was doing the same thing he wants everyone to want to know but he will not tell them he is just wanting the attention so bad. I thought that the phone both thing was interesting because he goes in there and he thinks back to himself all the people he could call and he ends up not calling anybody but he spends twenty minutes in there which is kind of a long time to be thinking of people that he could call after midnight. First off in the beginning of chapter ten he talks ALOT about his kid sister Phoebe about how she is so smart and pretty and stuff etc. and to me it seems like she is the only one he really accepts and doesn't criticize etc. and that's how you first start seeing the relationship and stuff of phoebe and him.
Later on he goes to the club or what ever it is and he sees those girls that are sitting in the table or booth whatever and I think he was thinking he could get some Gatorade or something since he couldn't get that one prostitute that he called in chapter nine. You could tell that he seemed really lonely and then he asks one of the girls with blonde hair to dance and he just does not seem like the kind of person that likes to dance as soon as I read that I was really surprised because it seems like he really doesn't like to do anything and I have tried and tried to figure out why he does not hate dancing because he is always hating everything so I tried to relate dancing to phoebe somehow and I could not I mean she dances but that is not enough. Ok in chapter thirteen I already start to notice that when he is talking about something or he gets on a topic he never stays on that topic for a while or he talks about whatever he was talking about for like ever and I mean forever like in that one chapter with the lungs he goes on talking for like an entire chapter about how much he hates them. Later on he says that he is an atheist yet he said he still wanted to pray and that doesn't make any sense to me maybe he does it just because that is what everyone else does so he thinks that he should do it its like that one thing we were talking about along like he is of the world but not in it and maybe if he prays like what other people do he thinks he is more in the world because he is like the other people. In chapter seventeen some where in the beginning is another hint that leads you on to thinking that Holden always turns everything into a kind of depressing sort of thing or he makes it more sad than what it really is. Because in the beginning he starts talking about the girls legs and how some are good and others are bad and stuff but the things he says it is kind of depressing because he wanders what is going to happen to all of them.
An overall thing that explains the whole book is your big ball of water theory with the fish and the ducks because he makes his life seem like he is a duck and every one else is a fish but little kids are half and half and when they get older they become fish and the water freezes over so they cant get back and he cant get to them and when the water freezes ducks fly away and phoebe is getting older so the water will freeze and he just wants to run away. Well I don't really have time to write anymore because I am doing this last minute and that's all I really have to say about the book the only other things I thought were interesting are the fact that he was going to run away then all the sudden changed his mind. and there you go make sure you read through and mame k sure its what you want, peaces!
