Just Meeting Tom And Lily example essay topic
In this paper, I intend to prove to you that the above statements are true. In the story "Searching for Summer", two young people, Tom and Lily, are married. At this time, the sun was hidden behind large clouds from, possibly, a nuclear blast. This is not made clear to the reader in the story. For their honeymoon, Tom and Lily went off in search of the sun. they motorbike that they were driving on broke down so they stopped in the town of Molesworth. They met an elderly lady and her blind son at a bus stop.
When they realized that the lady had left her purse, they decided to return it to her at her home into the woods. When they arrived, they discovered that the sun always shone at William and his mother's cabin. When they returned to the town to retrieve the fixed motorbike, they kept the sun secret to themselves when asked about it by the nosy innkeeper and left. Tom and Lily were kind to the elderly pair when they hardly knew them.
They brought the old lady's purse to her. "She walked so slowly... I think we ought to take it to her, don't you Tom?" (676). To me this quote shows how Lily is willing to help a person she doesn't even know. Another time that this trait is shown is when we find out that Lily is still wearing her wedding sandals on the walk to the old lady's home, even though it is painful. "Lily was still wearing her wedding sandals...
". (676). Not very many people would be willing to go through pain and agony to return a purse. I know that I might consider waiting until I had more comfortable shoes. But this just goes to prove that some people are just kinder than others to strangers. But they aren't the only ones in this story who are this way.
William and his mother show kindness to Tom and Lily in the story. When Tom and Lily arrive at their cabin, the old lady shows much gratitude and invites them in, even though she has just met them. "Come in, come in, my dears. My son William " ll be glad too hear company" (677). Now personally, i would be quite skeptical of someone, who I don't know, knocking on my door to return a purse, which might not even be mine.
But William and his mother are very unlike myself. They got to great lengths to help Tom and Lily. Another example would be when the elderly lady invites them to stay at her house for a few days for Lily to recuperate after injuring her foot. "Bide here why don't ee? Mid as well...
Won't us William?" (678). This really shows that even after just meeting Tom and Lily, the elderly pair care enough to let them stay into heir home. How many people in America, today, would do that? Not many if you were to ask me. But the only way to find out is to try it and then decide if you are going to repay them as Tom and Lily did.
Tom and Lily did something very kind for the elderly pair. They chose to keep the secret of the sun for two people they just met a few days before. When the innkeeper asked Tom and Lily where the sun was and they told him that it was in a different town. "Oh, we " ve been miles from here... Brinsley" (679). I know of a few people who would be willing to do such a thing, but not many, nowadays, have the correct morals.
For instance, look at the crime rate. I'll be that the hardest part was probably trying to decide whether to tell or not. "They thought of the cottage... the whole wood was as quiet as the inside of a shell" (679). To me, when they thought about the cottage and how quiet it was, this showed how much they loved the solitude. And in deciding to keep it a secret, they showed that they wanted William and his mother to live their lives in this solitude. That showed more kindness than any other part in the story.
I believe that it is true that many people tend to be kind to strangers by doing little things for them. And in this paper, I have stated 6 different possible scenarios that help to prove this trait. Now it is up to you to decide whether people are kind to strangers or not, but in the mean time, i hope you learn from Tom, Lily, and the elderly pair, to be kind to strangers. I have decided that, in comparison to the story, there aren't many people like that in the world today. But there is kindness in the world. And kindness is always rewarded and repaid.
So next time you notice that someone left their purse, or that they are stranded on the side of the road with a flat, don't just ignore it as if it isn't your problem. Help them out and maybe they " ll help you out later in life in some way unexpected.
