Critique of Why We Crave Horror Movies King stated "I think that we " re all mentally ill". To prove this he mentioned that we all talk to ourselves when no one is around. Furthermore, we all fear some things and stay away from them, or perhaps make a scene, or at least a face when we see those things. He continued the argument by stating that it doesn't matter if we are in a mental hospital; everyone is mentally ill in some way, shape or form.
Some people just hide it better than others. I think this point is vague. Just because someone talks to himself or herself when no one is looking doesn't mean that they have something the matter with their head. We all fear something and to come in contact with that something is going to make someone think again.
It's very difficult to tell whether King's information is accurate or not because it is just his opinion. There are no facts to back it up, only what the author has gained from his prior experiences. He makes statements such as "I think we are all mentally ill". This sentence is the basis for the rest of his thoughts and ideas.
Also, his view of insanity is fairly unclear. He gives examples of things that society has clear opinions on but never gives his own view. No matter what degree of insanity a person had, King feels it needs to be exercised preferably with a horror movie. He claims that the horror movie allows people to face those alligators in a controlled situation.
There is no proof that this keeps people from random acts of one's darker side as King implies; it's just his opinion. The real question we should ask about his writing is can we trust information presented to us by a man that thinks himself insane?
