The Witch of Blackbird Pond; Elizabeth George Speare; Fiction; 223 pgs; 1958 The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Spear is about Kit Tyler, a young woman, living in the time period of 1687. Kit is left without a family in Barbados and she has no choice but to travel to her only relatives in Connecticut. Her aunt, uncle and two cousins Judith and Mercy are surprised by Kit's spirited nature and unconventional views on life. Kit finds it difficult to fit in with her new surroundings and feels displaced.

She finds comfort though in her friends; a sailor named Nat Eaton, a child named Prudence, and Hannah, an old woman who lives in the Meadow that reminds Kit of home. The Puritan village believes that Hannah is a witch, and when the find that Kit has been spending time with Hannah, she herself becomes a target of suspicion. Kit must find a way to be true to herself without endangering those she has grown to love and she is faced with the challenge of finding her place in the world. It is during the trial for her life that Kit discovers the true meaning of love, loyalty and sacrifice. Kit Tyler is the main protagonist in this story for many different reasons.

For example she saves a little girl's doll, by swimming in the freezing ocean, while the whole town is watching her. The townspeople think whoever floats is a witch, and who ever sinks is innocent, since Kit Tyler swam in the ocean to get the little girl's doll, the town's people are suspecting she is a witch. She already knows this, but she doesn't care what others think of her, she just stands up for what she believes in. I think that is the most important characteristic that heroes or heroines should have. Yet, another reason why Kit is the protagonist in this story is because she has patient with the kids she teaches, and she does not complain when they fail to understand her. This is just one of her many talents as being the protagonist in this story.

A situation similar to the first one is when Kit found an old lady named Hannah Tupper, the townspeople thought Hannah was a witch, so when Kit started going to Hannah's house, the townspeople got even more suspicious of Kit of her being a witch. Kit did not care what other people thought of her, and she just wanted to keep the old, helpless lady company and help her with her work. Even if it means that her Uncle might kick her out of the house, and other people having suspicions that she is a witch, that might lead to Kit's death, but Kit will stand up for what she believes in, which is to help an old lady. Love, loyalty, sacrifice, and standing up for what you believe in is what makes Kit Tyler a true hero. I think if the book, The Witch of the Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare, had a different charter for the protagonist, the book would be very dull. In conclusion, I think Kit Tyler is the best role model of a protagonist.
