house party 2 and how it pertains to supervision in the hospitality industry I chose the movie House Party Two to do my paper. I realize that this isn't exactly what you would do for a paper on supervision, but there is a scene in which it seemed perfect. In this movie the plot was basically about a boy named Kid. Kid ends up getting a chance to go to college. His Church gives him the money for tuition and somehow it gets in the hands of his best friend named Play. Everything goes downhill from there.

Play end up giving the check to a con artist for a record deal. Kid is the forced to get a job and work in the faculty dinning hall. The bogus part is kid still is technically not a student at the school yet. This movie relates to our supervision class in many ways. One, Kid gets experience working in a running kitchen. Two, the head chef who runs things offers points of motivation and also uses the Carrot and Stick method.

Three, Kid gets promoted by working his way up through the job. Finally, it showed me that you have to be careful who you hire because Kid was not exactly a trustworthy employee. The first way this movie applies to our class is the kitchen itself. I have learned that to work in a kitchen is not an easy job. In the kitchen Kid worked in there where many activities were going on. For instance there were line cooks who were performing many duties.

Each person in the kitchen was helping one another out. You could also tell there was a lot of organization. The produce was another thing I noticed. Now that as not very organized. There were potatoes all over. The produce was to one side of the kitchen where prep looked like it was taking place.

Other workers were transporting goods on racks and making room for other things. Another funny thing I noticed was a certain chef who was sharpening his knife. Now it struck me that way because almost the first day you told us "Chefs are crazy mothers with knives". This one in particular seemed like he was from another world. When Kid looked at him I started to crack up. If he only knew what I knew about chefs!

As far as motivation goes Kid really had some of his own. He was motivated to get a job so he could survive on campus. When he first met his boss Mr. Lee he was not exactly peaches and cream. He laid down the law. He told Kid that he would be starting at entry level and if he worked his way up he would soon become Kitchen assistant first class. Now that relates to what I've learned because, the easiest way to get people to stay with you and work hard is to tell them that eventually they will get a promotion.

Even if you have to create a new name or a position with the same pay rate it still may give people something to strive for. Mr. Lee also offered Kid a pin for his work even though Kid thought it was a joke. Mr. Lee also used the carrot and stick method. He told Kid to stay off of his shit list he better put the hair net on. Now I think that was a good example for many reasons.

One, kid could get hurt if he didn't listen to his boss. Two, it was a health issue if he didn't wear the hair net then I he could have gotten hair in everyone's food. Mr. Lee seems like the kind of boss who doesn't play and only wants the best from his employees. Kid had many duties while he worked in the kitchen the first couple of days he was just squeezing oranges. He learned the new machine and eventually liked it. Another day he was on dish duty.

I also noticed that he was mopping the floor once. It seemed like he worked his way up because, he did get the promotion pin Mr. Lee had told him about the first day. Kid also had experience with working in the front of the house as well as the back. Servers were in and out of the kitchen. He had to come in contact with them sooner or later.

He did go on the floor when he had to present his paper to his teacher who was eating there. Another thing that I noticed related to our class was honesty. I remember that we learned to always check references and to be careful who you hire into your establishment. Kid technically wasn't a student yet at the college and went for a job. He did lie about that. Also if you can't trust anyone around your establishment then you shouldn't have them hanging around.

That was both the employee's part and the managers. Mr. Lee was just setting him self up for disaster. Kid did the right thing in the end and gave Mr. Le the money for the damages. Not every employee would have been that nice and responsible. All in all I'd say that this movie choice was a good one and I learned a lot from the class. The movie showed me that Supervision is in everything and I'm glad I know how to deal and treat my employees now.
