There were many people that people may say could bet the person of the decade, one of them would be Jack Dempsey. As shown above, Jack Dempsey's real is William Harrison Dempsey. He was born in 1896 to Harum Dempsey in Manassa, Colorado. His father was a poor timber man and a miner so it was rough for Jack when he was growing up.

When Jack was just a mere sixteen years old, he had become homeless. But in a matter of a year, he pursued his dream of being a boxer. He became extremely good and became a professional during that year. Few people were able to keep standing after their bout.

In nineteen-seventeen, he returned to box with a manager named Jack Hearts. His story will soon to become a "Rags to riches" story. Jack Dempsey, also known as the "Manassa Mauler", had a great impact in the nineteen-twenties. Babe Ruth was a great comparison to this man. Charlie Chaplin was known for films, Car usso was known for opera, Babe Ruth was known for baseball and Jack Dempsey was known for boxing. Back then people from all over had come to watch Dempsey fight.

People wanted to see brutal fights from the "Superhuman Wild Man", as they called him. Being a major sports figure of his time, he had to have a reason for people to come and recognize him. He was known for his 2nd round knockouts that occurred often. Jack Dempsey had held the title of Heavyweight champion for seven years after retiring Jess Willard by giving him a broken jaw, two broken ribs, a closed eye, and a partial loss of hearing.

He had beaten many of the great boxers of his time and could not been stopped. Although it seem as if he were a machine, he still didn't have a very smooth career. For a long four years (1923-1926), he had not fight title matches, just exhibition fights. But era ended also, so he would soon be up and fighting for titles once again. On September 23rd, 1926, he had found an opponent like no other, Gene Tunney.

After a long ten rounds, Tunney had walked away with the title. Dempsey was devastated and had to have a rematch. The media was all over this and the rematch would have to have been a good one. But on September 22nd, 1927, almost a year after their 1st meeting, they began the fight, which was called the "Long Count". People knew that this was going to be a magnificent duel. But unknowingly, the referee of the match had not counted correctly and robbed Dempsey of his title.

Dempsey had accomplished a great feat in which not many boxers has ever done. His record was astounding with 61 wins and only 6 losses and 8 ties. These were only the recorded fights, it was said the Dempsey had well over a hundred unrecorded fights. So as you can see, Jack Dempsey was an important person to have in the nineteen-twenties. He created great entertainment for people and had a very long life, which lasted from 1896-1983. Without this exhilarating boxer, boxing would have never arrived as much popularity it has come now.
