The Ku Klux Klan also known as the was created in 1865 and the founder and leader of the was Nathan Bedford Forrest. The main goal of the was white superiority. To reach this goal they would reach to violence and terrorization on blacks. The used white robes and white masks to hide their faces.
The was also known as the Invisible Empire. In 1871 a bill was passed that gave the president authority to use military troops against the. After that, the clan disappeared. A new leader named William J. Simmons organized new Klan in Georgia in 1915. The new Klan did not only hate blacks but all immigrants and Roman Catholic people. Since 1920 more than 2 million members were in the country.
The still used violence and terrorism. Most the Klan tried using peaceful means of getting to their goal. They elected officials across the nations, but when that happen the Klan started to weaken. By 1944 the clan started to disappear again. The Klan came back in 1946 by Samuel Green and then shortly died in 1949. After his death the Klan split into smaller groups.
During the Civil Rights Movement the used violence to stop the movement and then the FBI investigated the killings, and some Klan members went to jail. After this event the Klan population went down drastically. Today most of the Klan solves their problem in a non violent way and have a more respectable image. They now accept women and have setup youth groups. The is now known as the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. Some of the goals of the are reasserting America's White Christian heritage, return prayer to school, and stop reverse discrimination by doing away with Affirmative Action.
