During the late nineteen hundreds most companies hired their employees at a young age. In return employees would remain with the company throughout their entire career, and often retire at the age of sixty five. This strategy aided in job security, employee loyalty, and long-term benefits. This was better known as the? womb to tomb? employee.

In the twentieth century most employees started out working for a company in the mail room or as a courier. Companies believed employees needed full knowledge of departments to advance within the company. Once an employee gained knowledge through experience, they would eventually advance to supervisory or management positions. Later in the twenty first century, technology changed the values of companies and employees. Economic distress has also aided in the loss of benefits, job security, and work ethics. While twentieth century workers earned their positions through loyalty and dedication to hard work, twenty first century workers where place in more immediately.

Twenty first century workers where placed in higher positions from skills they have accumulated through education and previous employment.? Managers are often hired outside the company for their vision, ability to achieve results, or their ability to motivate people? (Carlson, 2002, p. 42). Through the transitions of these centuries the employee and the job industry changes constantly. Individuals from the twentieth century earned advancement by remaining loyal to the company. Later in the twenty first century employees are not as loyal, because they are always looking for faster advancement, and looking for bigger salaries.

These later employees tent to have more knowledge of the constant changing industry. Through both centuries there are business ethics that worker can benefit and learn from.
