And finally the Ministry of Love, which concerned itself with law and order. Orwell also uses description of technology to show how the government controlled its citizens. He constantly refers to tele screens that are in all areas and even in people's homes. They have been placed there by the government in order to see what is being said and discussed by the citizens.
He also tells of an occurrence that happens everyday called, 'The Two Minutes Hate. ' This event happens everyday at a specified time in which people assembled in front of a large tele screen where they were show pictures of terrible events in their history and then the face of a man who is their equivalent to Adolf Hitler. The mans name was Emmanuel Goldstein and was considered an enemy of the people. Winston is sick of his life in the ruined city and decides to keep a diary. This is against the law in Oceania.
He felt his feelings begin to hate Emmanuel Goldstein, leader of the enemy party. He also spots O'Brien, a party leader whose eyes he see's a bit of political sympathy. He feels it is only a matter of time before his though crimes are detected. A knock at the door he thinks is police. Mrs. Parsons, his neighbor is at the door and asked him to unclog a sink. He does it but smells sweat all over the apartment.
Mrs. Parsons is a follower of party doctrine and a fellow employee at the ministry. The children are members of Spies, a youth that encourages spying and telling on traitors, including parents. Winston is revolted. He returns home and writes in his diary a couple more minutes before going back to work. He washes his hands and hides the diary. Later we see him getting weak.
From the beginning of the book, it is shown how horrible Winston's health is and is continually getting worse and more difficult, but as Winston gets involved with Julia then he begins a metamorphosis into a more healthy person. Due to many restrictions in this government that led Winston to sickness and distractions of his thoughts made him rebel against "Big Brother". Through technology government tries to change Winston they do so by showing him rats which he fears. This book shows that the society is a great influence of the mentality of the people in it, even if they don't like it.
