4. Reading experience a) What are the different characters in the story? What role do they play and what is their relation with other characters? There are a lot of characters in this book.

These are the most important characters: SS Old Major is the wise old boar who speeches to every animal on the Manor Farm and tells them about the rebellion which would take place some time. He dies a few days after his speech, but set the rebellion in motion, by informing the animals about it. His role is about the same role Karl Marx had in the Russian Revolution, his ideas set the Communist Revolution in motion. SS Napoleon is silent boar, but when he wants something he will get it done.

He gets his own way and do not like fellow leaders like Snowball. When he sees that he is losing from Snowball he tells his dogs to drive Snowball away, so he gets what he wants. He likes the power and likes the power over other animals. Like Napoleon Bonaparte or Stalin in the Russian Revolution. Napoleon is a real dictator.

SS Boxer saves the farm and helps the farm every time by working harder than anybody. He believes in Napoleon and in the Rebellion, he will work for it. When he collapses he is taken away and sold. He is a loyal, hard working farm boy in the time of the Russian Revolution. SS The pigeons are the messengers of Napoleon, they are spreading the word of the rebellion to other farms.

Like the communists did in the Russian Revolution. SS Mr. Jones is the farmer who does no good. The same I didn't change my opinion because Mr. Jones stays the same man.

Name: The pigeons In the beginning of the book I liked them. They were smart and seemed to be friendly At the end of the book there are just the same as Mr. Jones No comment. c) What is the main character of the story? All characters are important in this story. There is not really a main character.

Maybe these are the most important characters: question 4. d) What is the theme of the story? The basic idea of this book is to show how the struggle for a better life by the animals on a farm ends up in the same misery as they were in before. If you know a little about history, you can easily see this book is a satire on Soviet Russia. This book tells the story about the Russian Revolution of 1917. In this story the farm is Russia and the rebellion is the revolution. The revolution itself was a succes but the new leaders (Lenin and later Stalin and in this story Napoleon), made life as miserable as it was before (nothing really changed).

All sorts of other events in the story can be compared with events which have taken place for real. The hostile relations between Animal Farm and their neighbours are the same as the relations between Russia and the outside world (for example the US which leads to the Cold War). The Russian Revolution proved to be a big failure since there wasn't any question about a revolution: everything was exactly the same or even worse than before. This was also the case with Animal Farm. Napoleon: Stalin Snowball: Trotsky Old Major: Marx and Lenin Jones: Nicholas Squealer: Pravda Dogs: KGB e) Give a short summary of the contents of the story.

The animals on the Manor Farm of Mr. Jones did not longer accept the bad way he treated them. One evening all the animals had come together to discuss how they could overtake the farm. Together they made a plan and Mr. Jones was been chased away. The Manor Farm was taken over and renamed in Animal Farm. In the beginning all the animals lived in happiness with each other and they were running the farm together. But after a while the real problems came up.

The animals tried to learn reading but only the smartest animals succeeded. The pigs, which could read and write the best, made seven rules which all animals should obey to: Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend No animal shall wear clothes No animal shall sleep in a bed No animal shall drink alcohol No animal shall kill any other animal All animals are equal These rules were summarised by the statement 'Four legs good, two legs bad'. But things changed. The pigs and the dogs made themselves the leaders of Animal Farm. They did it very subtlety so that the other animals observed the changes too late. But there was also a struggle for leadership between the pigs Snowball and Napoleon.

Snowball always had great ideas but Napoleon had most support from the sheep. After presenting a plan for building up a windmill Snowball was chased away by a group of dogs. Now Napoleon was the ultimate leader and he behaves more and more like a human being. He sleeps in a bed with sheets, he wears clothes and he even succeeds in walking on two legs.

The statement 'Four legs good, two legs bad' was changed in 'Four legs good, two legs better'. Life at the farm gets even harder then before the rebellion. There is little spare time, food is rationed and there is a sixty-hour working week. In the end the hardest worker of the farm, the horse Boxer, collapses while pigs and dogs are leading a comfortable life.

The other animals are shocked when the pigs start walking on two legs and that they are even carrying whips. One night the pigs have a party with two neighbours. But the other animals sneak up to the window where they hear Napoleon say that all memories of the rebellion will be forbidden and that the farm will be called Manor Farm again. From now on, there is now difference anymore between the pigs and the farmers, so that everything is the same as before the revolution. f) Where and when is the story set? The story is taken place on the farm, first the Manor Farm, than the Animal Farm and at the end Manor Farm again. When the animals decided to take over the farm and when they had driven Mr. Jones away they changed the farm name into Animal Farm.

At the end of the book the name was renamed to Manor Farm again by Napoleon. The story from the beginning until the end is about fifteen years, from spring until fall fifteen years later. The exact dates are not mentioned in the story, but it was written as a general parallel to the political developments in Russia between the pre-Revolutionary era and the Second World War. g) List some of the things you like and / or dislike about the story The book is just wonderful, it's a beatiful comparison with the Russian Revolution. It is not just a fable, but this book has a message.

There are nog things I dislike about the story. h) What are the incidents, scenes or moments in the story you remember most vividly? 1-The beginning of the story when Mr. Jones mistreats his animals 2-The revolution itself: when the drive away Jones. 3-The end: nothing has changed, there is now difference anymore between the pigs and Mr. Jones, so that everything is the same as before the revolution. i) Can you identify any feelings you experienced while reading the book? No emotional feelings, but now I can better understand the Russian Revolution.

5. After reading a) Why did you start reading this book. I heard a lot about this book and I had never read it, so this was my chance to read it. b) Did the book come up to your expectations? Explain.

And that was what I expected. c) Who (what kind of public) do you think the book is written for? Explain.

I think everybody can read this book. Kids can read it just for fun, and other people can found out the satire on Soviet Russia. d) Do you think other people should read this book as well? Yes, I think everybody should have read this book.
