History Homework 1) Why did USA not join the League of Nations? USA had many reasons for not wanting to join the League of Nations. Forty-two countries joined the League at the start and by the 1930's sixty countries had joined. This made the League appear strong but this wasn't the whole truth. However the most powerful countries hadn't joined.

Russia didn't want to join, as they were communists and hated Britain and France. Germany wasn't even allowed to join being the main enemy of the 'home Nations'. The League of Nations had many problems and difficulties. For example, the League was allowed to use military force, but they didn't actually have an army of their own so if a country ignored and order of the League, then there wasn't really anything that they could do about it. Another reason for USA not wanting to join the League was that it was in a huge muddle. All the different parts of the League were supposed to agree but in a crisis no one could agree.

This was made especially bad because for the League to make a decision, it had to be unanimous. Together, all of these reasons would have put USA off joining the League of Nations. 2) Why was their absence so unfortunate for the League of Nations? USA not joining was a major blow for the League of Nations. USA was undoubtedly the super nation of the world, just like it is today. Without the Americans the authority of the League was largely called into question.

If USA had joined the League then a country having problems, either with the League or another country, would almost certainly abide by whatever they said. USA would have brought many other advantages to the League of Nations. They were easily the world's richest country and if their money had been put into the League then many things could have been done. For example, a proper army, just for the League of Nations, could have been built with the help of USA.
