Ralph Waldo Emerson had many radical views on liberalism and conservatism, which, at the time, were bold and groundbreaking. Ideas such as these have changed over the past 200 years. Politicians all over the country apply these beliefs to their basic ideas of what a government should be and form political parties. These ideas affect our government as well as our daily life. Emerson believed that conservatives established "reverend hierarchies and monarchies of the ancient world". In other words, conservatives of his time wanted to keep aristocracy.

Obviously, most conservatives were of the higher class in society. Emerson said that conservatism is apologizing, but must accept problems of the present. He also said that they plead necessity and denies the possibility of improvement in change ("stone the prophet"). However, present day philosophers believe that the founding fathers of our country planted the seeds of present-day conservatism. Republicans are, according to present day writers, conservative. You can see the changes in the American government today.

The Republican president wants to keep peace and liberate any possibility of nuclear war in other countries. Also, the president sticks to the goals of that of his father by destroying terrorism and bringing the end of Saddam Hussein's rule, which he's done. He is also trying to help other countries as we have done before, instead of helping our country, which he has put in deep debt again. In my honest opinion, I believe that American's that support this type of government have no consideration for the future of the country because they still live in the past and past accomplishments.

Supporters of conservatism are usually the older generation who like things the way they are. Conservatives are of the autumn and winter. It's all recollection of the past rather than creatively thinking of the future. Technology and ideas of the people have changed and living in the past will not solve the problems of today or tomorrow.

It does have some ideas that are helpful, such as the ideas within the constitution and also the morals of the past stick through to today. Emerson believed that liberalism is always on the attack and seeks reform relentlessly because their very basic value is innovation. The state of everything at it's possible best. He also believes that liberalists take affirmative action, but "has no gratitude, no husbandry". In other words, he believes that they do not learn the lessons of the past. Emerson was thinking that liberalists were trying to get away from the aristocracy era and move toward a more equal society.

Over the past two hundred years, the ideas of others have evolved the definition of liberalism. At the time, liberals fight for deeper things than the end of aristocracy, but with improving the general public's view on race and suffrage. Liberal ideas, according to recent writers, have helped provide childcare for the working poor and social security for the elderly. Liberalists believe that no tradition will be more in important in promotion our cultural vigor than protecting individuals from "subservience to majoritarian conformity" If a liberalists true objective behind his argument is found, conservatives can usually beat them down so most people shy away from liberalist views. America would be better if we had more of a liberalist's point of view that we would have a better society. If the people of America could change their view on racism from that of the past to what should be the future would end a lot of problems we have today. Liberalism does have its dilemma's also.

According to the definition of liberalism, it says that we should always have new ideas. Does that mean we should have slavery again and disregard the constitution? I think not. I believe that a mixture of both liberalism and conservatism would help not only in government, but life as well. We could look past our differences, but embrace likenesses to help make the world a greater and better place.
