o Describe the surroundings of the main character: literal and mental + proof by telling or quoting. In the book there isn't one real main character, so I have to choose the one that's the most important for what happens in the story. His name is Teddie Deakin. The story is about a group of people who end up in an old station at night because the train had to stop. The station chef tells them that the next train is at 7 o'clock in the morning, so the group wants to spend the night in the station. But the station chef tells them a ghost story about a ghost train 20 years ago where 6 people were killed, so he doesn't want to stay in there.
There were a lot of discussions that night, and finally Teddie plays the biggest part in the story. He's the one who always wanted to know what was true about the whole story. In the end it pointed out to be a gang who made use of the whole story to transport illegal weapons. The literal surroundings of Teddie are of course all the people in the station: Elsie, Richard, Charles, Peggy, Saul, Miss B., Julia, Sterling, Price and the gang. Everybody is a bit detached from Teddie because he makes everything funny when everybody is frightened. He's the fool of the whole company, but actually he was busy with a serious job to find out about the story.
It was just to distract the people from what was happening. In the end of the story is everybody happy because Teddie made everything clear. The mental surroundings of Teddie are his thoughts about what would happen that night. He doesn't believe in ghosts so he wants a proof of that. He doesn't want to leave the place before he knows what's really happening. I think it's a rather good book for a simple play.
Most of those plays I have read are very boring, but this one wasn't. The characters are very clear; you immediately know what sort of people they are.
