Liz And Maggie Of My Darling example essay topic

In My Darling, My Hamburger by Paul Zin del, the main characters go through problems of the real life. Problems that are not easily solved, problems that people keep from everyone - except, of course, for their best friend. In reality, some of these "best friends" wouldn't tell anyone about their friend's problem, considering the fact that the friend with the problem told him or her to keep it a secret between the two. But, what happens when these problems are so severe, so extreme, that this "best friend" tells someone else about the problem?

What happens then? Would he or she lose the other person's friendship... or would the person with the problem understand that his or her best friend was only trying to help? Perhaps the time when Liz and Maggie, of My Darling, My Hamburger, go through one of these severe problems, may help you understand the consequences of these situations and the value of friendship when it comes to necessity, help and honesty. Liz Cartensen is a young teenager in high school. Liz and her best friend, Maggie, go through problems that every teenager in America goes through: dating, the prom, friendship, guys and / or girls, and, of course, sex. In My Darling, My Hamburger, Liz finds out that she is pregnant.

At first, the only person she tells is Maggie, but Liz knows that eventually she will have to tell her boyfriend, Sean Collins. However, Liz and Sean had some problems in their relationship - and telling Sean about this won't be so easy for Liz. She attempts to tell Sean about her pregnancy, but Liz doesn't really have the courage to tell Sean. Yet, Liz ultimately tells Sean of her pregnancy.

Sean is shocked. He turns to his father for advice, saying that his "friend's girlfriend" is pregnant. Sean and Liz planned to get married, but Sean tells her that he doesn't really think that they should get married after all. Liz gets mad at Sean, but the story keeps going... As the story of, My Darling My Hamburger continues, Liz decides that she is going to "get rid of it". Liz tells this to Maggie on the same day that Liz tells Maggie of her being pregnant.

Maggie cries, but Liz makes her stop. Several weeks later, Liz is picked up at her house by a young man, who's older than Liz, named Rod. Rod works in a hospital and does Liz the favor of bringing her to a doctor so that Liz can get an abortion. Of course, Maggie, being Liz's best friend in the world, comes along with Rod and Liz. Rod and Maggie wait in the car for a number of minutes until Liz comes out of the doctor's office.

She comes out normally, as if she had just gone for a check-up. Maggie immediately asks Liz if she is feeling alright, and Liz mumbles, with gum in her mouth, a simple, "Uh-huh". While reading this part of the story, you can tell that Maggie is still somewhat worried for Liz. As Rod drives up to Liz's home, Maggie realizes that Liz is crying. Maggie sees that Liz is in pain, and after a moment, Liz says, ."..

Oh God, I'm bleeding". Maggie and Rod are both equally frightened at what Liz said and Maggie doesn't find what to do. She walks out of the car, to get some help from Liz's parents. Liz yells, over all the pain, .".. Don't let them know", but Maggie goes on. Liz adds", ...

Let me die, you lousy traitor!" Now, the question is concerning Maggie. Was she right in telling Liz's parents about Liz's situation? Many may believe that Maggie was right. She had all the right in the world to do so.

Maggie, as you can tell, was only trying to help. She had no other alternative. The fact that her best friend in the world was bleeding after getting an abortion was something that could not be left alone; so of course, Maggie went and got the help that was fastest to get... and it just so happened to be Liz's parents. I feel that Liz's parents had to find out about Liz being pregnant and then getting an abortion. When Maggie told Liz's parents, the only thing that changed was that Liz's parents found out sooner about Liz's "secret".

Anyway, after finishing the story of My Darling, My Hamburger, the fact is that Liz does not want to speak to Maggie ever again, ever. Although Maggie apologizes by writing notes and calling Liz, Liz does not want to hear from Maggie, for she is, indeed, to Liz, a "lousy traitor". Maggie writes to Liz in one particular letter after the incident: .".. I only did what Thought was best for you... I thought you were dying... thank God you didn't, Liz". Well, I believe that Maggie was 100% correct in involving Liz's parents against Liz's wishes.

Even though Liz didn't want her parents to find out about her pregnancy or her abortion, I think she has to realize that Maggie was just trying to help. Maggie, obviously, had no other choice. Things Liz should " ve taken under consideration are: what if she had died? What if Maggie had listened to Liz and hadn't called for Liz's parents? Liz's reaction wasn't justified at all. Liz acted way too negative about the situation.

She should " ve understood Maggie and why she did what she did. It is true that perhaps Liz was thinking of other means of help besides her parents, or that perhaps her situation wasn't as bad as Maggie thought. However, Maggie did help Liz a lot by telling Liz's parents. Anyway, it didn't cause much difference in Liz's academic life -Maggie says in the same letter, "I asked about you... you can still graduate". In conclusion, I strongly believe that Maggie was totally correct to have Liz's parents informed of Liz's pregnancy and her abortion as well. However, the way Liz reacted to what Maggie had done, which was only trying to help Liz, was wrong and unjustified.

Liz should " ve thought of Maggie's reasons for doing so (to avoid any more problems with Liz's health). So, do you feel it was right of Maggie to involve Liz's parents while Liz told Maggie not to?
