Lorene At Soccer Practice example essay topic

316 words
Lorene Cary Lorene Cary, an African American girl in Black Ice is non-athletic, a coward, afraid of trying new things and too quick to judge. In the first scene we meet Fumiko, a Japanese girl. On the way to soccer practice, Fumiko asks Lorene if she likes to play basketball. Lorene replies "no". Fumiko tells Lorene that she use to play basketball all the time in Japan and if Lorene would like she would teach her how to play.

Lorene though would rather sit out and watch Fumiko play because she didn't want to embarrass herself with her little to no knowledge about the sport. On the other hand, Lorene also wanted to sit out and watch Fumiko play because she thought that Fumiko was just a geisha girl. After that thought passed through Lorene's head she was ashamed for thinking that because Lorene knows from experience that white people judge her just because she is African American. In the second scene we find Lorene at soccer practice complaining to her coach that she has asthma and cant push herself as much as the other players. Which to me seems that she was using her asthma as an excuse not to practice at all. Then on the way to one of her classes she tells Fumiko that she doesn't feel that she is able to do soccer practice everyday because it makes her feel exhausted.

In the end Lorene sits on her bed reflecting upon what had happened that day, feeling bad about how the day went and sucking on her inhaler to ease her asthma from the hard soccer practice. Its almost as if Lorene didn't really want to play soccer because she didn't want to do any work at all or that it was forced upon her to join the soccer team.
