The Los Angeles Police Department and the New York City Police Department are from two major cities, but are their hiring standards different or alike? After comparing these two law enforcement agencies I found that they were both alike in their hiring standards. The Los Angeles Police Department is committed to serving the community while protecting the rights of all persons. It is the mission of the LAPD to safeguard the less and property of the people they serve, to reduce the incidence and fear of crime, to enhance public safety when working with the diverse communities to improve their quality life web. The mission of the NY CPD is to enhance the quality of life in the city by working in partnership with the community in accordance with constitutional rights to enforce the laws, preserve the peace, reduce fear, and provide for a safe environment to the people of the community web.

Both agencies share the same hiring procedures and it all begins with a written examination that is taken to determine the ability of each candidate in reading comprehension and communication. A candidate must pass a physical test that consist of events to evaluate the physical performance of each person. Additionally, a pre-employment substance screening for drugs and alcohol may be required web. The employment requirements for the Los Angeles Police Department and the New York City Police Department are alike in the minor hiring requirements as well. You must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire, posses a valid California or New York drivers license, and both of these law enforcement agencies also require that a police officer candidate be a United States citizen or that a non-citizen be a permanent resident alien who in accordance with the requirements of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, is eligible and has applied for citizenship. Both agencies have a certain medical criteria that each candidate has to met.

This is determined by a medical examination that is a part of the hiring process and the candidate is required to take prior to hiring. A psychological test is taken as well to evaluate previous written psychological tests and the background findings web. These examinations are few of the many steps needed to fulfill in order to be considered for employment by these agencies. The New York Police Department requires a person to have completed at least 60 college credit units with a G.P.A. of at least a 2.0, or have 2 years active military experience, or 2 years satisfactory experience as a traffic enforcement or School Safety Agent web.

These two agencies not only share the same mission but they also share the same hiring standards. Your physical shape plays a great role in this process. You must not exceed a certain amount of fat to ensure that you are in the shape required to perform many task that a person will put in use when they are on the job. It is also important for each candidate to be mentally healthy as well. I believe that this should in fact be the "industry standard" hiring process. I think that the training that these future to be police officers receive will play a huge role in their careers as in how they will serve the community.

If not a lot is expected of them then we can't expect a lot of them as well. The type of work that they are required to be around needs them to be in good physical shape and mentally capable to make wise decisions. With their training these officers will be able to deal with issues that need to be handled professionally and profoundly whether it be a traffic violation or domestic dispute.
