"Night" Eliezer Wiesel The question "hope and belief are necessary to survive" is portrayed very strongly in this novel, most people in this book will follow, quote "without hope no-one can survive", although, in the case of Eliezer Wiesel this is not the case, through thick and thin he survives, losing friends, relatives and even close family members. He loses Moc he" the Beadle, a good friend and mentor when the first selection takes place. then he loses part of his family when they get to Auch wich, then things get worse and worse and finally he loses his father, the one person closest to him. the only reason why he survives is because he does not't lose hope. During the lead-up to going to the concentration camps, the remaining towns people received messages from the hungarian police imitating the towns people who had already left, saying everything was great where they were fine. this caused the towns people to believe that everything was going to be fine and deportation was just like going on a holiday. when the towns people were put into the ghettos they thought, "we should no longer have before our eyes those hostile faces, those hate-laden stares. Our fear and anguish where at an end we were living at among jews, among brothers" instead of 'oh no we " re being segregated' they always looked at the positive side of things. "hitler wont be able to do anything to us even if he wants to". and looking at the positive side of things became their downfall, When Eliezer finally arrives at Birkenau, the reception center for Auschwitz, he is picked to become a worker, and not to go to the crematory. there he sees a truck drive up and tip a truck load of babies into a fiery ditch. there Eliezer loses his faith and belief for god, but as he still has hope he still can survive. a lot of other people come through this center, including Elie's mother, and sister, Tzipora who 'lost hope when they arrived and therefore lost their lives in the fires of Auschwitz to lie to someone is classified wrong although when Eliezer lies to stein about his family in antwerp, he then gathers a small amount of hope and can continue to live even know that starved and skinny, this also proves the question "hope and belief are necessary to survive" because when stein finds out what happened to his family he is never seen again. (presumed dead) simply, throughout the novel you. have to have a reason to live, this could be something like looking after someone, something or just want to see something happen, Eliezer had his father to look after most of the way through and after that he just wanted to see his family again, if for any reason Eliezer lost hope for his family then he surely would have died like stein of antwerp.
