A View From The Bridge? by Arthur Miller, in which the main character Eddie Carbone is under stress due to various incidents throughout the play. Millers play puts forward the idea of stress, human behaviour and how humans can react differently in stressful situations. The play is set in the Red Hook, a rundown area in Brooklyn, New York. Red Hook is notorious for the large amount of illegal immigrants that enters its streets and works in its docks "? the gullet of New York swallowing the tonnage of the world'. Most of the men in Red Hook work as longshoremen as does our main character Eddie.

Like most of the men who work on the docks, Eddie is masculine, strong and is very commanding. The stage is set at the beginning in a very peculiar and interesting way, the stage area is split with Eddies house and Mr. Aflieri's office both on stage but significantly below Eddies apartment is a phone box, the phone box that he called the immigration bureau, so Miller put the phone box there as a clue of what the ending was before it happened. The story begins to unravel, when two illegal immigrants (Marco and Rodolfo) enter the country to stay with Eddie, Beatrice and there adopted niece Catherine. Rodolfo and Catherine immediately fall in love and much to Eddies dismay they plan to get married.

Eddies unknown passion for Catherine, leads him to do the unimaginable and break the Sicilian code of betrayal. Earlier in the play, Eddie gives an example of a young boy who told the immigration bureau that he had an illegal immigrant staying in the house, he received the ultimate punishment, to be dragged down to the street and shown for the dog that he is. Eddie said a very interesting quote "And they spit on him in the street, his own fathers and brothers? You? ll never see him no more, a guy do a thing like that' this quote show how much Eddie disrespects the kid for telling on his Uncle but then Eddie shows us how stress, jealousy and lust can drive you to do anything, even the thing you despise the most.

Eddie is put under great stress and this affects my understanding of human behaviour. Marco and Rodolfo are arrested, then let loose on bail. Eddie in now a social outcast from the rest of the neighbourhood after a scene with Marco where he "stole his name' by disrespecting him in front of the neighbourhood. Marco now released on bail, heads for Eddie wanting revenge for killing his staving children back home in Italy. They have one last final confrontation were Eddie pulls out a knife but Marco turns the knife blade round and slabs Eddie in the stomach, leaving him to die.

Various characters and different situations puts Eddie in stressful moods that affect his normal behaviour. Catherine is the main cause of stress for Eddie. Eddie has minded her since she was a child and in most instances treats her as his very own daughter. There strong father / daughter relationship is slightly stronger in Eddies view as he has a physical attraction towards Catherine but does not seem to know this in his own mind "Beautiful? oh if your mother was alive to see you know! She wouldn? t believe it. ' He is clearly indicating that he thinks that Catherine in attractive but is shielding it by saying "? if your mother was alive to see you..

The head are turning like windmills. '. The quote clearly shows his jealously towards other men seeing Catherine but he covers it up by saying that it is for her own good. A key part in the play is when Catherine is offered a job but Eddie brings up excuse after excuse, then finally Beatrice gets angry and tells Eddie that he doesn? t want Catherine to grow up "She's seventeen years old.

You gonna keep her in the house all her life. '. There is a pause before Eddie answers then finally he agrees that she can have the job. Eddies worst nightmare then begins to play in his head that he will lose contact with Catherine "And you? ll come to visit on Sundays, then once a month, then Christmas and New Year finally. '. Rodolfo is another character that is putting stress on Eddie, he is putting stress on Eddie because he is dating Catherine.

Rodolfo is not exactly the typical Italian, he has blond hair, sings, cooks and makes dresses. Eddie thinks that Rodolfo only wants to marry Catherine so that he can get his papers to stay in the country legally. He also has a theory that Rodolfo is a homosexual because he makes dresses, sings and cooks. Eddie tries to show Catherine that Rodolfo is a homosexual in a gripping part of the play. Eddie returns home drunk he sees Rodolfo and Catherine in the house alone and immediately expect the worst, he then kisses Catherine and when Rodolfo tries to stop him he turns pins Rodolfo to the ground and kisses him. Eddie does this to show Catherine that Rodolfo is a homosexual and to embarrass Rodolfo in front of Catherine.

Eddie symbolizes his hate for Rodolfo when he tears a newspaper clear in half, Eddie tries to get even with Rodolfo by saying that he will teach him how to box, he then punches Rodolfo in the face, really trying to hurt him, Rodolfo then begins to realise how much Eddie hates him, he then goes back and dances with Catherine. The first major conflict between Eddie and Marco happens, Marco challenges Eddie to a test of strength, which he wins, showing Eddie that he is far superior in strength. That gripping climax is the end of the first act, the picture of Marco standing triumphantly over Eddie as well as Rodolfo dancing with Catherine and Beatrice looking on distressed will stay in the audiences minds until the second act begins. Marco causes a lot of stress in Eddie because he proved to Eddie that he is stronger and in the later parts of the play he stole Eddies name from him by embarrassing his in front of the neighbourhood, then in the end finally killing him.

Beatrice is causing stress on Eddie for various reasons, such as, Eddie feels that Beatrice does not respect him anymore. Eddies feelings deep inside for Catherine have resulted in him and Beatrice not having sex for over three months. This shows that his feelings for Catherine have resulted in Eddies and Beatrice relationship suffering. This shows a point of how human behaviour and feelings can change a relationship between two people.

Eddies feelings within and his stress level building up to a danger amount can result in a change of personality and can change the way he acts physically. Eddie had the power within to stop Rodolfo marrying Catherine, he tried to stop the wedding using various techniques, making a scene of Rodolfo, telling Marco to tell Rodolfo to stop going out with Catherine, he even applied hints that Rodolfo was a homosexual but in the end to stop the wedding he realised that he had to tell the immigration department about Marco and Rodolfo. This tells us that under stress you can act differently and would do things that usually not under stress you wouldn? t think about. In conclusion, Eddies behaviour was that of a man that was under stress, brought on by no-one but himself. He should of let Catherine be, let her get on with her own life and nothing would of happened but Eddie wanted it all but he knew and others knew that he couldn? t have Catherine "?
