Lord of the Flies Essay Lord of the Flies by William Golding is about a group of young schoolboys that get stranded on an island after their plane crashed during World War II. The main theme in Lord of the Flies is 'Original Sin'; this is demonstrated through the plot, setting and characters in the novel. The plot of the story clearly demonstrates 'original sin'. The novels events start with the fight for leadership between the boys. Although Ralph gets voted as the 'leader', Jack challenges this decision and therefore a rift begins, and two groups are formed, Jack and the choir boys, the more violent and savage group and Ralph, Piggy and Simon, the sensible but weaker group. Ralph and the choir boys solely focus on hunting, leading to them losing the plot and becoming savages.

This sava dry later leads to two of the boys losing their lives. These events demonstrate the triumph of original sin. There were the 4 main characters in the novel Lord of the Flies', each character representing a behavior in society. Piggy was the quite and sensible one of the boys on the island. This however resulted in him being picked on by the more dominant and stronger boys. Piggy could have very easily done the job of leader.

In society he would have been the helpless victim. Near the end of the novel Piggy becomes a victim of Jacks savages and dies as a result. Ralph, as voted by the boys was the leader of the island. He thought smartly, by lighting fires on the mountain to try and alert planes or boats passing by. This was Ralph's main goal.

Ralph represents calmness and intelligence in society. Jack was very different to Ralph. His choirboys saw him as a leader, because he liked to take charge. He was very aggressive and his main goal was to hunt and find food. Jack represents violence and aggressiveness in society. An example of this violence is when Jack stabbed his knife into a tree, for no particular reason.

Finally there was Simon, who mostly kept to himself, away from the main groups. He was a very mysterious kind of boy. Just before Simon was brutally murdered he became delusional and started to hallucinate. For example he thought that the Lord of the Flies, which was a pigs head on a stick, was talking to him. As told by various events throughout the novel Lord of the Flies, the main theme is Original Sin. This is clearly portrayed when the boys get out of control, as there was no adult present on the island, to maintain order or set rules or for the children.

I think Original Sin can easily get out of control, and it just shows you how much adult supervision is needed amongst children. I thought this novel was very strong and had some really graphic depictions of murders and wild arguments on the island..
