Not too long ago, when people thought of parents who home schooled their kids, extremists came to mind. Today, this view is changing. Many families solidly within the political and social mainstream have turned their family rooms into classrooms. There are approximately 1.7 million students being taught by their parents, therefore, home schooling doesn't impair children academically or socially. Home schooling does not impair children because of how much time and money it saves, the curriculum options, and the better attitude about school that it gives children. Families that home school are often happier than other families who don't.

The average student attending a public school spends at least 8 hours a day at school, not to mention extra curricular activities and homework. Count up the hours spent fundraising, volunteering, attending meetings, conferences, field trips, and not to mention the time children spend travelling on a school bus, and compare it to the efficiency of learning at home. It takes only five minutes a day with a first grader, and approximately 2 hours a day for a high school student. Spending less time in the books enables students to expand their knowledge through hands on activities. It also allows them to use their imaginations and not get caught up with the bad influences at public schools.

Along with saving time, home schooling also saves money. When home schooling a child every parent is entitled to an Alberta Learning Parental Discretionary Funding up to $1300 per child, per year, to cover music, sports and art lessons, art and science supplies, curriculum choices, and anything the parents think is necessary to enrich the child's education. With this money the parents buy books for the children to make sure they are learning what other kids their age are learning. This makes home schooling cost a lot less than sending the child to another school.
