All storylines have some type of feature that enables them to be compared and contrasted. The plots do not have to be related in any particular way nor do the characters have to play a similar role. In the movies, Prefontaine and Awakening's, they have plots that can be compared and contrasted by going in depth of the movie detail. The protagonists of both these great movies move promptly in the goal they want to achieve, but they end up in the exact position which they were not hoping for.

Both Steve Prefontaine and Malcolm have unstoppable drive to succeed in their ever lasting careers, both are around patients who may not match up to them or are good to their learning abilities, and finally neither one of them leave an lasting impression for the audience around them. The main characters, Steve Prefontaine and Malcolm have unstoppable drive to succeed in their ever lasting careers. Prefontaine, although not built like a runner, and discouraged at every turn, he broke and held every American distance record between 2000 and 10000 meters. He is an unusual runner who succeeds more with sheer will than natural talent. Even after Malcolm Sayer's (Robin Williams) research funding is cut off, he continues to a hospital full of catatonic patients that are in need of "awakenings". The patient's are filled with awe and enthusiasm that teaches the introverted doctor to value life's simple pleasures.

These two men have captured the essence of society by going to their maximum effort to accomplish their career goal. Both protagonists are around patients who may not match up to them or may or may not help their learning abilities. To Malcolm Sayer, the patients are the catatonic members of the hospital he is working for. For Prefontaine, his patients are all the runners he triumphed over in his races throughout high school.

Patients are always here to give us, the doctors, training and values for ourselves. In Prefortaine's case the other runners in high school were his patients to get him ready for the Olympics in Munich. But in the case of Malcolm, treating his catatonic patients helped him see the gratification and bliss of life. Finally neither one of them leaves a lasting impression for the audience around them.

Soon, all of Malcolm's patients are returned to their previous state of catatonia, the only evidence of their brief awakening the greater respect and affection they receive from the staff and their impact on Malcolm, who heeds Leonard's call to life by reaching out to the nurse. Prefontaine spots a better runner from Finland and starts to doubt himself. He leaves all his viewers and fan's on the spot as he loses to all the contestants in Germany. They prove their unstoppable drive to success, their learning abilities by their patients, and their lasting impression leaving the people around them on a bad overlook of them.

Steve Prefontaine and Malcolm Sayer play very similar roles in these two very completely different movies... Movies do not necessarily need to have the same type of drama or acts to have a comparison or contrast..
