As the father of modern civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is recognized around the world as a symbol of freedom, peace, and nonviolent civil disobedience. When he spoke, one would listen in awe, hearing his persuasive voice influentially reach out to others. He definitely had the power of persuasion and tried to influence non-violent acts. Although Martin Luther king was a minority, not only did he speak for his own race, he spoke for the general public. He was a man of color with a passionate soul who spoke out willingly in order to express his true feelings about any matter. Obviously, not everyone agreed with what this man influenced, but others did, and proceeded to watch Dr. King become one of the greatest non-violent leaders of our history.

It has been said that Martin Luther King Jr. has committed treasonous acts. Given the information known about King, I have concluded these accusations are false. However, there is such evidence that may lead one to think differently, yet I still believe Martin Luther King was harmless. It has been claimed that he could have been tried for treason. There are reasons to this accusation in which will be explained, but aside from these claims I will present to you some information of why I feel he should not be held captive for this act. When the government notices someone taking action, and persuading others to act differently than the governments, they begin to view this person as a threat.

In order to demolish this threat, they must think of a way to get rid of the intruder of their laws. Since many Americans took in Martin Luther King's words, they thought they needed to get rid of him before the minds of others were altered. By charging him with treason, it was an easy way of getting rid of him. The Constitution of the United States, Art., defines treason against the United States to consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid or comfort. This offense can be punished with death. By the same article of the Constitution, no person shall be convicted of treason, unless on testimony of two witnesses to the same overact, or a confession in open court.

Treason consists of two elements; adherence to enemy, and rendering him aid and comfort. Through his powerful speech, King states that from the enemy's view we may see the basic weaknesses of our own condition. He also says that it is possible to learn and grow profit from the wisdom of the brothers who are called the opposition. One could most definitely take this statement and bend it around, swearing that Martin Luther King Jr. was on the opposition side. Not only did he try and understand the view of the enemy but also he said we could perhaps learn something from this. By stating this, it seems as if he is unsure of our own government and would rather put his shoes in the enemies.

Because of his open-mildness one would perhaps think he could quickly convert to the opposition side. Despite of what others did, Martin Luther was an incredibly stable being who would not suddenly change his opinion on something. If he knew something, he would share it. If something would help benefit others, he would allow for all means necessary to carry out the deed.

Just because he wanted to understand the enemy, does not insist on him wanting to side with the enemy. He was most definitely worried about our own troops. He states that the initiative to stop must be ours. Clearly, he admits to wanting the war to be stopped. In his speech, he even gave five suggestions onto what the government should do to start the process. By saying that war is not the answer, how could one be persuaded that King was aiding the enemy?

Despite the reasons given, I still believe this historical figure did not commit such a sin, so to speak. Martin Luther King Jr. simply took a stand. A stand that most people are afraid of taking. This courageous man only yearned for peace.

He spoke for peace, formed organizations that specialized in peace, and influenced peace all throughout the nation. How could one accuse such a peaceful man of treason? The day King was assi nated, he died with dignity and honor, clearly showing America how someone with such profound passion can effect a country just by speaking out. As clearly as I am concerned, he never did commit treason; rather he spoke out, sharing his thoughts and concerns with the world that would listen. He spoke the truth; the truth of what some wanted to hear and what others didn't.

Kings speeches may be translated as you wish, but his powerful words will forever be in existence. We have his speeches to remind us of what a real non-violent leader was. He was a real man with a lot to say. I'm sure he had much more to say but one should be grateful for the short existence of such a powerful hero who was such a positive example.
