In Dorothea Dix's tour of Massachusetts' prisons, she observed disgusting conditions beyond belief. Not only were the mentally insane subject to these horrible conditions, but so were all the other hardened criminals that were incarcerated. These inmates are shackled in cells that are dark, dirty, damp, unsanitary, smelly, diseased, isolated, and cramped. All of these conditions were present while the inmates were laying in their own filth. This is no way for any human being to live. I'm not saying these violators of society's rules should live in beautiful castles on God's great Earth, but they don't deserve to be locked in an unlivable pigpen.
Something must change immediately before these men and women all die from these retched conditions. We must also allow these inmates to redeem themselves and become good citizens of society once again. The first way we can change the prison system for the better is to place the mentally insane in their own special home. In this home they can receive treatment for their problems instead of being shackled and beaten in a prison. They need to be separated from criminals, which the insane are not. The main way the prisons can be changed though, is to rehabilitate the inmates so they can serve a good purpose in the everyday community.
This is the alternative to having the inmates sit and rot in a disgusting cell and live a meaningless existence. That is no kind of existence for any living creature. You can at least try to forgive their horrible sins and let them be changed into good people and actually live a life worth living. So I beg and plea that these changes can be made so we cannot only better the prison system, but improve our society and the human beings that live in it.
