Arthur Miller's View On Vengeance Essay, Research Arthur Miller's View On Vengeance Arthur Miller's View on Vengeance Arthur Miller offers ideas that vengeance was very prominent in the way of life during these times. The Puritans in The Crucible often blamed others for things that went wrong in their life like Mrs. Putnam, Walcott, the girls, and Abigail. Commonly "witches' were brought to "trial' because people were naming them out of revenge instead of actual suspicion. In many cases of vengeance in the book people blamed other people for their misfortune". I have laid seven babies unbaptized in the earth. you never saw more hearty babies born. They were murdered.

Goody Osburn was midwife to me. I begged him no to call her My babies shriveled in her hands. ' Mrs. Putnam said. She truly believed that someone was sending out spirits on her new born babies because they kept dying and she blamed it on Goody Osburn. There weren't really any medical advances with the birth of babies and what to do while pregnant at that time all Mrs. Putnam could think was Goody Osburn had done something wrong. Mrs. Putnam couldn't think about blaming herself about something being wrong when she was pregnant or in labor.

Giles was also very upset when Walcott charged his wife Martha with being a witch. Walcott said she had bought a pig four or five years ago and the pig died soon after being sold to her. So Walcott feels that Martha sent over some spirits or cursed the pig to die. Another example is when the girls were found dancing in the woods. Instead of talking the blame and just getting whipped the girls maintained their innocence and blamed it all on Tit uba. When they found themselves getting deeper in trouble they started naming people to save their behinds.

In this case the girls did it to keep themselves out of trouble Abigail was the main one seeking revenge on someone. Every since her affair with Proctor she was in love with him and could not accept the fact that he didn't want to have anything to do with her. So when she started naming names she felt this was the perfect time to get Goody Proctor out of the picture and make room for her. But after Proctor found out he had a fit and went on a rampage about his wife being named.

He said this about his wife's innocent and vengeance, "She is innocent! I'll tell you what's walking Salem-vengeance is walking in Salem. now the little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law! ... I will not give my wife to vengeance!' He feels that the witch trials are absurd. They aren't built on any form of fact and a based on what the girls say.

Later Hale comes to the same conclusions as Proctor and leaves the court. Hale feels that vengeance is in Abigail testimony (it is in her testimony) and that the whole trials have been based on revenge. In this play Arthur Miller is trying to point out that in a closed community as this something like the witch trials are bound to happen because one cannot voice ones opinion. He feels that vengeance is a way of life in the community and will be a way of life until they can talk discuss their feeling openly.
