Mrs. Emily Mrs. Emily is a young lady who grows up in the Old South. Her father chased away many suitors since he believed that no one was good enough for his daughter. Her children, if she had married would have introduced her to the new and modern world and she might have accepted it. However, she never married or had children. She was destined to forever remain a symbol of the Old South. Mrs. Emily symbolizes the Old South in several ways: She paints China, She will not discuss money matters with the aldermen, and She will not allow an address to be put on her house.
"China painting lessons also show the change in Southern society". Mrs. Emily represents the old south because she can paint china. The "modern children" grew up and they didn't send their children for lessons because it was a thing of the past. "Only a man of Colonel Sartoris's generation and thought could have invented (the story) and only a woman could have believed it". Colonel Sartoris did not want to embarrass Mrs. Emily by asking her to take charity, therefore, he asked her told her a lie that the town had borrowed money from her father and now they were remitting her taxes as the best way to return the favor.
