More Passive Her Personality And Sexual Drive example essay topic
These two movies help to show how women are rebelling against sexual social norms, and they are taking a more active and aggressive role when dealing with heterosexual relationships. Women in today's society seem to be having a very difficult time expressing themselves without dealing with lots of criticism. Common values are standing in the way of women's drive toward molding themselves into whatever they desire. Our culture has made standards about how should women look, act, and conduct themselves that greatly limits what they can do, and still gain respect. Martin S. Filbert and Mark W. Meyer state that", [there are] more negative [gender] stereotypes for men than for women". This idea doesn't seem to have a great amount of validity in our present society.
Society set certain standards that men are supposed to live up to such as strength and confidence, which are more behavioral characteristics. Women seem to be more trapped than men by societies standards because they are supposed to live up to standards dealing with beauty and size, which are more physical characteristics These specific guidelines have been set by society that are sometimes unattainable for a majority of women. The women that follow the specific criteria are greatly respected, and the ones that try and be innovative usually are criticized if not disliked. The movie The Graduate depicts a story about an older woman named Mrs. Robinson who is tired with her marriage and sex life and decides to spice up her life a bit with a different man. She notices a youthful man named Benjamin Braddock who just graduated from college and is very inexperienced sexually. She decides to seduce the young man, and does it quite successfully even though she is a married woman with a daughter the same age as Benjamin.
Most mothers would consider Mrs. Robinson's situation as inappropriate because it does not send the traditional image to her daughter of what is right for women to do. While trying to seduce Benjamin, Mrs. Robinson is completely upfront with what she wants from him. In this movie Mrs. Robinson is displaying her non-feminine characteristics in order to accomplish something that isn't acceptable for women. Mrs. Robinson doesn't wait for the man to make his move; this woman is extremely aggressive and uses almost manly tactics to accomplish her goal. Manly tactics would consist of anything that is parallel to being aggressive or overconfident.
Devor considers, .".. masculinity [as] usually characterized by dominance and aggression, and femininity by passivity and submission" (447). Seduction is the process of inducing someone to have sexual relations. Women seducing men by aggressive or even passive means is usually rare, but a woman inducing a man to have sexual intercourse when she is two times older than the man is even rarer. One social myth describes that the older a woman is the more passive her personality and sexual drive is.
One could easily see that this myth is not true because Mrs. Robinson has a very hardy sexual drive and is very aggressive at her 'old' age. This movie was obviously very controversial because it was the first in it's time to show aggressive sexual power with a more mature woman. The Graduate also knocked open many doors dealing with women's aggression and cracked the social norms for other movies in the near future. The Last Picture Show is also a film that deals with conflicts involving female sexuality. The main character, J.C., is a young woman of about eighteen years of age who lives in a small town.
She is like most other girls and wants to marry her high school sweetheart and live happily ever after. During this time period a woman sticking with one man for the duration of her life was very common because it was expected and accepted. One night J.C. experiences something very unusual and it alters the path that she was going to take. She goes to a party that is different from any party she has ever been to with people who are a little more sophisticated than what she is accustomed to.
Everyone is naked and swimming in a pool and they all want J.C. to follow their example by getting undressed. She ends up getting naked and experiences a new high she has never felt before. She feels like she has joined a new 'class' of people and feels accepted, people of her own economic status, which is higher than both of her boyfriends. After this class 'acceptance' J.C. becomes a very sexually driven and aggressive woman who expresses her sexuality in a less traditional way. She basically asks her ex boyfriend to have sex with her so that she won't be a virgin anymore. During the scene J.C. is extremely aggressive and even mean towards her boyfriend because he cannot (or refuses to) have sex with her.
Most women would act sympathetic with the boy, but J.C. makes fun of him and actually yells at him. This behavior is very similar to the behavior that Mrs. Robinson displayed when she was inducing Benjamin to have sex with her. In The Last Picture Show J.C. takes advantage of two men by using her sexual power to seduce them. She has sex with the first man, but just toys with the second one. It seems like this young woman gains more and more confidence by showing that she can have her way with whomever she wants. If a woman were to act this way, whether now or at the time the film was made she would be considered a whore or a slut.
If a man were to act this way, he would be considered a typical guy. The way that men and woman are supposed to hold themselves seems a little bit unfair. Men have a free rein to chase after what they want and act almost animal-like. Women on the other hand are really trapped by the boundaries of what society believes is acceptable and not acceptable. J.C. and Mrs. Robinson have shown the ultimate rebellion by showing that they can break these social norms and are not trapped by society. In both movies, The Graduate and The Last Picture Show, the women are completely confident in each of the different sexual situations. The reason that the two women are extremely confident is because they have experience in dealing with men who are sexually inexperienced.
Women who seduce men and are very aggressive are not usually accepted by society and these women are very extreme because they have habitually practiced this controversial behavior. In both movies the two women are being aggressive and seductive, but both are using different approaches. Mrs. Robinson is using her age as a type of authority, and J.C. is using her vibrant beauty. Powerful and beautiful women can have almost an infinite amount of power if they desire.
Men are the ones who usually have more control, but if a mentally strong or a attractive looking woman wants something, she can use a man to get it. Men sympathize with women and if a woman were to take an aggressive role like J.C. does, the control can switch from one side to the other. Women, specifically Mrs. Robinson and J.C., seem to be greatly unhappy with the roles that they are supposed to play in society during the 60's and 70's. They might not be the only ones that are unhappy though. Women in our present society are dealing with the same problems as the women of thirty and forty years ago. Nancy Felipe Russo believes that there are many signs of "male discontent with contemporary conceptions of masculinity".
Women always seem to have discontent for gender roles, but men may also have the same discontent that women do. Gender roles such as size, aggressiveness and toughness are what men have to deal with because of society's standards. All gender roles basically add pressure on people to be a certain look or behavior, and although women have it bad, men may be dealing with some of the same problems that women face everyday. Benjamin Braddock is a good example because he is obviously not fulfilling social expectations and is possibly not satisfied.
Another gender stereotype that is blatantly opposed by The Graduate and The Last Picture Show is which gender has the greatest sexual drive. "Abbey (1982) suggested that men attribute more sexual relevance to a male-female interaction than women do" (Koukounas 3). Obviously this idea does not apply to these two movies. In both movies the confident females are more devoted sexually than the men are.
Because they are more interested in sex, they have more power over the situation. The men are almost caught off guard because they are used to seeing the social norms which state that men should be more interested in sex. By being caught off guard they are already at a disadvantage sexually. In The Graduate, Benjamin is extremely confused when he and Mrs. Robinson are in the hotel lobby trying to get a room.
The poor guy doesn't know what he's doing with this experienced woman and because of this he acts almost childlike the entire time. The two women in both of the movies The Graduate and The Last Picture Show are not employed or working in the home. Throughout both films these women are only seen in a sexual predator context. Women in today's society commonly have jobs or are housewives and are not just 'shutting around' everyday. Kimberly A. Powell and Lori Abels believe that "women [are] portrayed in passive roles as housewives, waitresses, and secretaries... ".
The two women are definitely different than this opinion because they both do not obtain passive jobs, or any jobs for that matter. Powell and Abels also stated that, .".. men are seen in active roles as construction workers and doctors". Men usually do have jobs such as these because of both the makeup of the male body, and also the standards set by society. If both women, Mrs. Robinson and J.C., were employed they would probably have more male oriented positions because of their aggressive nature and sexual drive. If they were employed in a male oriented position they also might lose some of their sexual tension by releasing it at work. Sometimes men use their day jobs to get rid of excess stress and possible sexual tension, Mrs. Robinson and J.C. could possibly follow the same path if they desired.
The movies The Graduate and The Last Picture Show represent conflict ions in social standards involving female sexuality. Both women in these movies demonstrate a heterosexual drive and aggressive sexual appetite that is in opposition to the traditional ways that females are supposed to conduct themselves. These movies help to show that although most women follow the perception of gender roles, some women disagree with these social standards and oppose them in their own heterosexual ways against convention. These concepts are important because even though the two films The Graduate and The Last Picture Show were made in the 60's and 70's, the same problems J.C. and Mrs. Robinson dealt with thirty years ago are still pertinent in today's society.
