In Literature, authors have the ability to convey very meaningful messages through certain moods and with the use of literary elements. In Macbeth, a Shakespearean play, anger, fear, and cruelty seemed to have been evident in the hearts of many characters. The reader can immediately feel the tension and the anxiety of the characters in the beginning. As for the short story, "One Autumn Night", by Maxim Gorky, the mood portrayed was more thankful and glad to have life- rather than dreary, hateful and sorrowful. The contrast of the two works is as follows; the author's intentional mood in Macbeth for the soliloquy in Act V, scene five in the play was contrition, bitterness and malevolence. It showed deepness, a sorrowful outlook on human existence.

In the short story the author portrayed through their characters' moods, a more uplifting mood, and a more valuable outlook on life. In these literary works the moods are in contrast of one another as they show very different outlooks on similar, sorrowful situations. William Shakespeare gave a very unique tone to the play- in the soliloquy of Macbeth, his own misfortune of the death of his wife lead him to almost insult the entire human race. As he stated " Out, out brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow... " his portrayal of the human race is that of senselessness, and absurdity. Shakespeare used a very persuasive mood to convey the deep feelings of Macbeth.

Macbeth's own turmoil turned his faith in life upside down to the point where he no longer believed in the actual meaning of life. .".. a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage then is heard no more... ". This is an example of the feelings evident in Macbeth after his wife died. His feeling now is that life just doesn't matter- nothing matters. His wife is dead. This dreadful and dispirited mood projected through one single speech was a very important literary point in the play.

In " One Autumn Night", on the other hand, the author shows a more thankful and innocent mood portrayed by the narrator. Even though the narrator was alone and penniless, he found warmth and fulfillment within a kind soul. Only a chance meeting- in an unfamiliar place with so little that all the characters had was the warmth of eachother. Imagery gave the reader the ability to understand what the characters were going through and where they were.

That made it more unbelievable that in the end of the story the narrator made such a terrible time in life sound almost like a blessing as he blessed the person who helped and comforted him during his time of sorrow and need. Again the mood portrayed by the author gave insight as to what and why the characters were feeling and how difficult it must have been to maintain a peace within themselves and still reach out to help a fellow human being in need. There is an evident contrast between the two literary works. In Macbeth, the mood throughout was drastic, and sorrowful, and showed clearly the afflictions of the characters.

In " One Autumn Night", however, eventhough the characters were desperate, cold, and weak, they still managed to see eachother through a very difficult time in both of their lives, and share within them a kindness- sought after by no one but given freely.
