Movie Between Tyler And Jack example essay topic
Edward Norton plays a typical American who goes to his nine to five job every day, does what he is told, has the same boring routine everyday, and seems to do whatever is reliable. His alter ego, named Tyler Durden, is portrayed as a completely psychologically and physically separate being throughout the movie. Fight Club tells the story of an everyman who wanders from the safety of his nine-to-five life into a no-man's-land of violence and social insurrection. The fight club becomes the means to prove and demonstrate their masculinity to themselves and each other. Edward Norton's character bases his identity on material possessions. He is an example of the normal American male at the end of the 20th century, who is caught up in buying their identity.
In the scene at his apartment where he discusses the type off things that he owns illustrates this point, and shows that he thinks he can find happiness and identity in these items. He thinks he is happy because he owns certain objects that people desire. Everything in his apartment is from Ikea and everything is in matching order. Which then he walks through the apartment and it is portrayed as an Ikea catalog with his possessions having product descriptions and prices underneath them. This illustrates the fact that Jack is trying to find happiness through materialism, which proves to be a very hollow lifestyle to partake in and serves as the main catalyst for the creation of Tyler. Jack's relationship with Tyler is related to Jack's identity crisis.
The physical struggles that occur during the movie between Tyler and Jack symbolize the battle between the two personas in Jack's mind. Tyler's persona is attempting to free Jack's persona from his dull existence by showing him excitement in the world. Jack is living the American Dream, in which he has a nine to five job and he has a nice apartment. He wears a shirt and tie every day to work and has to see his boss every day. For an example Ed Norton works in a claims department for a large car manufacture.
His job is to decide what a manufacture does in case of a design flaw. Take for example, if a carburetor runs a risk of exploding after 100,000 miles; ED Norton's job is to investigate the probability of this happening. Then take the number of vehicles on the road and multiply them it by the probable rate of failure and multiply the product again with average price of an out of court settlement, which seems very boring. Jack's life was going nowhere and he needed change to make himself happy. This was accomplished by the creation of Tyler who helped Jack discover passion and excitement in his life. Tyler has Jack do things he would never have done for example: living in a run down home and picking fights.
Jacks life is boring and Tyler is trying to show him that you can create your own identity with out showing off what you own. Jack soon realizes that he doesn't need material values to prove to the world who he is. With his Fight Club he has gain the respect of many. In the beginning of the movie Jack would go to support groups. In these support groups, men are told to gather power, strength and courage from each other not from themselves. At the end of the sessions men are told to hold each other and cry, things that are very non-stereotypical of men.
He sees people that are farther lost than he is and he gets enjoyment from that. When he and Tyler create Fight Club, Fight Club becomes his support group. He is now around men who are full of adrenalin and he feels safe. In today's society you see people driving down the street in there big suv's with twenty inch rims and playing their music so loud you can hear feel it in your house. You see people with new cloths and a new pair of shoes everyday. We live in a in a consumer culture that gives life value by what is bought and owned, not by the individual.
People do perceive others by what they own and not by whom the person is. Just because a person is wearing a pair of Air Jordans or drives an expensive car, does that individual automatically get respect?
