Movie Martin And His Men example essay topic
Tavington then threatened Martin's children and captured Gabriel, a military courier delivering dispatches between Continental Army units, and a younger son, Thomas was killed by Colonel Tavington, while trying to save his brother's life. And despite Martin's soulful plea, his son was not spared nor was his home. Leaving five children to fight with his eldest son, Gabriel, Benjamin enlists a group of peasants, old warriors, farmers, and one black slave to fight with the militia against the British soldiers. The remaining five children; Meg, Nathan, Samuel, William and Susan are left with their aunt on their mother's side, Charlotte. The rag-tag group of militia men began a slaughter upon the British soldiers, attacking them on all fronts.
While the militia fought their fights, Gabriel, ever the patriot, was concerned about the militia not fighting the "right" type of war. He stood up to his own father and those who believed that the British should be killed not fought, and fought to the end for the cause of freedom. Between Gabriel's dedication to the cause and Benjamin Martin's military experience, the dedication of the men fighting, the cause of freedom was fought on all fronts. However, during the fights, many men were lost, including another of Benjamin Martin's sons, Gabriel.
After Gabriel's death, Martin's fears were solidified and vowed not to fight for anyone's causes. However, he realized that being a true patriot was the only way to honor his son's deaths, so he fought for the cause of freedom and was truly victorious in his fights. While The Patriot was a very successful major motion picture, characters from the movie actually mirror those of characters that were indeed real. Colonel Tavington's character is based on the life of Lt. Col. Bana stre Tarleton the subordinate of Lt. General Charles Earl Cornwallis of the British Army. Benjamin Martin's character was based on Francis Marion (which is also now a famous hotel in historic downtown Charleston), also known as "Swamp Fox" fought Indians. In the movie Martin and his men destroyed the Indians, however in the reality Marion and just a few of his men survived.
Not only were there differences in the characters in the movie and those of the real life characters they portrayed, there were also some differences in the battles, as well. During the Battle of Camden the movie shows the Continental regulars fleeing during the battle, however in actuality the home force consisted of two-thirds militia, that left quickly, followed by Continental regulars. The real mistake by the leadership was having untrained scared militia fighting against a well trained British force. The fact was Gates made a huge error during the Battle of Camden by advancing his Virginia Militia against the British regulars whose precision with firearms and shouting basically scared the Continental regulars, sending them retreating. Gates was ordered by General Thomas Sumter to take his guerrilla forces, which included Benjamin Martin to attack the enemy supply line. This caused a great deal of trouble for Cornwallis' troops.
While The Patriot is based on some facts and some real characters, film is not the best choice of research. Because film is meant to be entertaining, the directors and producers will take creative liberties in order to make a successful movie. Not only that, but they also have the ability to take creative license and put their personal beliefs and bias into such a film. It's very easy as a consumer to watch a movie or a television show especially if it's based on what the public considers fact.
Take for example the television show CSI. Having worked with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office in Memphis, TN for the past eleven years as an investigator. In processing crime scenes several victims have asked "How about all the special equipment?" Or "why can't you do that, it's done on television?" films and television can sometimes hinder the reality of real situations. So not only through watching films, but from personal experiences as well, I feel that there are more effective ways to conduct research.
And as explained in the last paper, the internet has been very useful in finding information films are created to peak the interest of the audience and for them to become curious enough to find the true facts by studying what actually takes place in real-life situations. I feel that through reasons such as this, that movies are a wonderful tool for research. On the other hand, movies do bring in personal preferences of directors and producers. Movies are used for those in positions listed above to let their creativity flow and to use their real life experiences to elaborate on characters. I did, however enjoy learning that this movie used real life characters to base fictional characters on.
