Mozart's Patron example essay topic
But a good thing for Salieri was that most operas still did involve God. Through out Salieri's childhood his father had forbid him to become a composer because in so many words it was a waste of time for him. Normally a father dying would be something bad but being the man Salieri would turn out to be it is understandable that he would take it as gaining his freedom. He would become Gods instrument because he vowed to heath the word of God in his music.
He eventually worked his way to be the court composer for Emperor Joseph II. The real jealousy came to him when his dreams were put on hold because Emperor Joseph II asked specifically for Mozart to compose a national opera for Viennese. Salieri found that young Mozart was in fact a prodigy at a concert thrown by Mozart's patron, the Archbishop of Salzburg. To find that Mozart was in fact a prodigy disappointed Salieri quit obviously. It was in his mind that God had chosen Mozart to be his voice instead of him. Because of his broken hopes and shattered dreams his faith because to diminish immensely.
Because of Mozart's greatness spreading rapidly through the public and it was obvious that the Emperor himself loved Mozart, Salieri's hatred for Mozart and distrust for God was more and more obvious throughout the movie. The reason that I say it is quit obvious is because Salieri jumped at every chance he got to sabotage anything having to do with Mozart. His sabotage had to do with spreading rumors about Mozart molesting his pupils and stating that he could not be trusted with women, his intentions were obviously to make Mozart look like a molester so he would not be hired by any one else. You would have never thought this to have been done by Salieri because he hid his hatred so well from everyone else by posing as Mozart's one and only trusted friend.
This was shown by the fact that Mozart would always come to Salieri for advice for his troubles. He would offer real advice to Mozart but he would go behind his back to tell the Emperor that he was uncontrollable and must be controlled. Despite how much Salieri hated Mozart he was still in love with the music composed by Mozart. With Salieri knowing that Mozart was the one chosen to be Gods instrument he decided that he would not be at peace with himself until he killed Mozart, because he had it set in his mind that God liked Mozart more than God liked him. Finally Mozart gets this brilliant idea to play a forbidden opera because it was inappropriate.
The Emperor finds out about this because of Salieri. Salieri found out about this because he had infiltrated a spy, the maid that kept an eye on absolutely everything Mozart did. Well the Emperor decided to change his mind and allow Mozart to play the opera. I think he did this intentionally because to me it looked like he planed to yawn during the Marriage of Figaro and the general public follows the same trend and everyone decides that the opera is a bore and a waste of time. Because of Mozart's miserable failure, Salieri took it upon himself to redeem himself. But instead of being the God fearing man he once was he decided to completely abandon God and his dream of being "Gods instrument" for fame.
Feeling the adrenaline to be better than Mozart he performed opera and became the favorite for the Emperor and the Emperors people. Not only did Salieri take Mozart's fame, but also his patronage. When he was in Salzburg the patron came from the Archbishop, now since he was in Vienna he had no patron. He had to resort to the people's theatre. When Mozart's father died, it looks as if he took Mozart's spirit with him because he begins to drink with a passion.
The alcohol abuse brought him to be fatally ill, and while in his deathbed, the "trusted friend,"father figure" Salieri came to his side to help him compose his requiem mass, in which he planed to claim as his own. It is obvious that Salieri helped cause the early death of Mozart because of all Mozart had to endure during his lifetime. If a man has love and it is taken away, he can live. If a man has money and it is taken away, he can live. But if a man has power and it is taken away, he will die shortly thereafter. Which is exactly what Salieri did.
He was jealous of the power, fame and wealth Mozart had so he was relentless in his actions to take it away. At the end of the movie I learned that Mozart was in fact buried in an unmarked grave because he was too poor and could not afford his own tombstone. At the beginning of the movie we hear a God fearing man, but at the end we hear someone that is content with his actions. Someone that wanted attention so much that he not only ruined a prodigies life, he drove him to his only grave, and unmarked grave. In today's world a person that did that would go to jail or go through capitol punishment because in the eyes of justice it is just like assisting suicide. Especially since he helped murder his career.
