The Minister's Black Veil By Nathaniel Hawthorne Anti-Transcendentalists believed that everything has a good or evil side, and that the truths about these matters would be terrifying and disturbing. Both of these views are represented in the story, The Minister's Black Veil, where Mr. Hooper wear's a black veil to conceal his hidden sin. He can't understand why everyone judges him differently just because of his black veil. These contrasting views help us view ourselves and how we should view others. In the story, one day out of the blue Mr. Hooper just starts wearing this black veil and the people have no idea why he is wearing this piece of crape. They then start treating him different because they don't like the black veil.

They also can't see his face and that bugs them. They feel that their minister has gone mad. All the congregational members can do is sit and whisper among themselves and try and figure out what Mr. Hooper is trying to accomplish by having this covering on half of his face. What they really don't know is that Mr. Hooper has this veil on half of his face because he is trying to hide his secret sin. He doesn't want to look the world with his face because he doesn't want them to see him and look in his eyes and be able to tell that he is hiding something that he doesn't want anyone to know about. Even his fianc'e tries to get him to remove the horrid veil and he said he would when the hour is to come.

He knows that everyone else should be wearing a black veil because they are all hiding their secret sin as well. Mr. Hooper feels that his secret sin is a very evil thing and he doesn't want anyone else to know about it. The people in his congregation don't understand why he has to cover his face like that and they treat him a lot differently now just because he has the veil over his face. Mr. Hooper doesn't understand why his people would treat him any differently because he hasn't changed at all as a person, he has just changed his appearance somewhat and people shouldn't judge one another on their appearance, they should be judged on their inward qualities.

Mr. Hooper feels that he is doing what is good by shielding the world of his sin and part of the problem his congregation has is that they too have a secret sin and they don't want to own up to the fact that they do and admit it. The people make more of a deal than they should have about they veil because they are letting it ruin their happy times and they are making their sad times even sadder by thinking about the black veil. A couple got married in the community and it was supposed to be a joyful time but just because of the minister having the black veil on they completely made the whole day gloomy by just thinking about it and letting it get to them. But really the minister believed the people had such a hard time dealing with it because of their own secret sin and they couldn't accept the fact that they also have secret sin. All people have secret sin that they can try and hide, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and people find out about it. We can hide from the bad things forever.

Sometimes it is best if you face your problems and deal with them right away and it will make the rest of your life a whole lot easier. Everyone has a secret sin in one way or another and so no one has to feel like they are alone because everyone one else has joined them with having a secret sin.
