In these two stories "The Necklace & The Jewels" The two woman are almost similar as well as the men are similar. The story "The necklace the main character is Mathilde Loisel we see a change in her attitude about life. This change comes about when she has to learn on of life's little lessons the hard way. She and her husband are forced to live a life of hard work and struggle because of her own selfish desires.

Mathilde changes from a woman who spends her time dreaming of all the riches and glory she doesn't have, to realizing that she over looked all the riches she did have. Mathilde is a round character, she is the one who changes or evolves with the events of the story. She learns that one should be content with what one has and that it is okay to dream but not let your dreams keep you from seeing reality. And in the story "The Jewels" the two main characters are Mr. Lantin and Mrs. Lantin. Though Mr. latin is the protagonist, he soon gives in to desire to be rich. Lantin's wife is an indirectly described round character.

The reader is never told how she feels about wealth, but is shown through her words and actions. "What can I do? It is my Vice. I know you are right, but I can't change my character. I just adore jewels. (Pg. 167) The wife's death is implied to be caused by her desire to obtain wealth.

When she had been to the opera one evening in tbe winter, she returned home shivering with cold. The next day she began to cough. Eight days later she died from an inflammation of the lungs. The connection of her death with her attendance to the theatre is a symbol that her going there and wearing the jewels is what caused her death. The climax in "The Jewels" occurs when Lantin discovers the truth of his wife's wealth. This is the point where Lantin gives in to desire for wealth.

He quits his job and spends his new herititance frivolously. Eventually, he marries again, but this cause him to suffer a great deal. tHIS IS A SYMBOL OF A PUNISHMENT FOR lANTIN BECAUSE OF HIS SURRENDER TO THE DESIRE OF WEALTH. bOTH LANTIN AND HIS WIFE ARE PUNISHED FOR this desire. Maupassant sets a theme in "The Necklace & The Jewels" that teaches a lesson that the desire to be wealthy does not come without consequences. Maupassant uses characters with lives that are affected by the desire of wealth, symbolism and conflicts representing the consequences and an introduction of and ironic theme that teaches moral values of poverty. the giving in to this desire is what causes the down fall of Mr. and Mrs. Loisel and Mr. and Mrs. Lantin..
