Mrs Darwin example essay topic

Mrs Darwin Layout: . Stood because of length. Diary entry 'e relates to the present time when Darwin was alive. Went to the zoo. I said to him- Something about that chimpanzee over there reminds me of you Fits Darwin's idea that we all evolved from monkeys / chimps. ..

Amusing because his wife is represented as being simple, whereas he is obviously highly intelligent. The simplicity of the poem's layout and content is such a contradiction as a piece of literature about Darwin because his theory was so complex. Darwin is only represented as "him"- more informal We automatically assume "him" is Darwin but it could be anyone, it leaves it open to interpretation. Duffy wants us to think for ourselves. Maybe the audience assumes it is Darwin because at the time husbands were thought to be the main focus for a "wife's life", they stayed at home to care for the man's needs whilst the men went to work. The rhyming "zoo" and "you" is simple 'e again reflects simplicity of his wife; she may not have ha a formal education.

Maybe used to also snappy and more humorous. Mrs Darwin is trying to be witty but you can imagine Darwin coming back with a comment like "Yes dear, that is called evolution" and her being like "What are you talking about you silly fool!? !" Maybe he's tried to explain his theory to her before but it isn't values in society and she is teasing him about it, but in my eye she just seems to be foolish. Not a great piece of literature as it is simple and only three lines long but Duffy has probably thought that to the un-trained eye it looks like a 8 r-olds masterpiece but we know Duffy is a good poet, I think tat she has more ideas behind the poem itself that stemmed it than it actually contains, whereas other poems are more face value. It shows Duffy's humour not her competence for writing poetry..
